I have noticed that on my friends alpine it gets loud when turned up to like volume 16 while for my kenwood I have to almost turn it up all the way to get the same results?

    Re: Kenwood volume....

haha, you didnt set your gains right

or maybe he didnt set his gains right

Nonetheless "16" doesn't really mean anything

all manufacturers have different volume numbers, haha, Aiwa's go up to 100 or something

Set your gains with a DMM, and call it a day

    Re: Kenwood volume....

    That's just how they are.

The volume's on a sort of curve.... The higher you turn the volume up, the more rapidly the volume increases.

It's to give you as much flexibility as possible in the quieter settings, for those early morning work commutes when you don't want to have a heart attack.

    Re: Kenwood volume....

no question about sound quality, they do sound great

but it's perfectly normal for your entire typical listening range to be 20-35

the volume falls off fast under 20 or so

    Re: Kenwood volume....

i set mine with 0dB tones at volume 30

that way i can turn it up a bit more to compensate for music that's quiet

    Re: Kenwood volume....

Yeah, it's the way they're designed. I've owned two Excelons (the X717 and currently the X589) and the volume drops sharply below 20. I usually have mine set between 25 & 29.
