i've used all of these decks over the past year, except the sony cdx-c860es. The sony i have had since the late 90's and it still worked almost perfectly up untill last year when it stopped playing disc's. It was the greatest deck i have had the pleasure of owning, and am still searching for similar quality. After the sony died i purchased an alpine cda-9807 which had two positives, one being it never skipped and would play anything, the other was the display was always clear. The negative was mainly the sound quality, it never sounded as clean as the sony and seemed to always add hiss and background noise to everything, it also hated cold weather, had to let car heat up before unit would function properly. I decided to try another unit to try to capture the old sony luster, and since i read a lot of good things about pioneer i thought why not and bought an old pioneer deh-p7000r which is older like the sony, but theres where the comparisons ended. It seemed to add noise to everything like the alpine, but was a slight sound quality improvement, the negatives were the terrible daytime display was impossible to see, and it was very picky about playing some cd's. Finally got fed up with the display and purchased a jvc arsenal kd-ahd59 and finally i'm getting somewhere, great display, no background hiss, pretty good sound quality, almost getting back to the sony es level.
I used all the players with the same set-up of an eclipse 32440 premium, diamond audio d3 5.25 components and a sound ordnance ported box 12. once i get a head unit i'm satisfied with i plan to upgrade the d3's that are in kickpanels with something with a silk tweet, i used to have a set of jl audio vr components and would love to find another set.
