Friendly bump for a great head unit... I'd go in on the group with Keep if I didn't have my heart set on getting my 7998 back...

Glad I got my 7998.... An audio engineer doesn't need the imprint tech. 9887 still seems promising

i just want to play with it so i can answer people's questions on it. manual mode is the only mode i am interested in. i would like to have a more flexible manual EQ.

Oh I knew it was for experimentation with you. You know your ish... From what I hear nobody likes the results.

I run Apogee converters in my studio right out to Dynaudio BM12A's so I'm really sensitive my music... I would never use it. I just picked up an Alpine 7998 and a G320. Should suit me well...

    Re: Alpine 9887 with KTX-100EQ

i ran a G320 for the better part of a decade, usually in 14band EQ mode. my main concern was analog noise. the H701 with optical in was less noisy than the G320 with Ai-Net analog in, but the 9887 alone is less noisy than either processor. The G320 didn't have the digital volume distortion the H701 was known for (which is why i ditched the H701). only some head units will let you use the G320 in manual T/A mode. for example: the 7939 was one of them but the 7930 wasn't.

honestly, i'll probably just mod some pro audio rack gear to run on 12VDC. maybe a dbx DriveRack PA+ (since they are owned by Harman now)

the 7998 is a great HU. the sound tuning features are the same as the 9887, but with the phantom face cosmetics and a biolite screen. not sure if you know this, but the downside to using the G320 with either HU is that you won't be able to use any of the sound tuning features of the HU. with the alpine processors, you lose HU tuning. and since Ai-Net causes the pre-outs to be at a fixed volume, and the output volume is controlled at the processor. you cannot use HU outputs and processor outputs at the same time. basically, the G320 is perfect with an older Alpine HU. My favorite combination (that i ran on several occasions) was the CDA-7939 and G320 due to the discrete T/A feature. sadly, this did not take advantage of the optical output on the 7939. it sounded better to run the 7939 with the H701. as such, most of my time was using the CDA-7930 and G320.

while this may seem off-topic for this for sale thread, it isn't IMO. anyone looking for the 9887 wants a HU capable of running active while enjoying modern conveniences such as mp3 or ipod. the downside is lack of USB support and the requirement for external boxes for other interfaces. i'll just leave a 120Gb or 160Gb ipod in the car. i've ran CD changers with both the G320 and H701 connected to a dozen or so head units. all worked fine, but CD changers are a thing of the past. most modern alpine HU's with versatile link can use the cheap KCA-121B (or equivalent) for an AUX input. sadly, that uses up the Ai-Net port so you cannot connect something else unless that device also includes an AUX input or you get the discontinued Ai-Net hub.

the 9887 is quite flexible, has a very low noise floor, and i run it at full volume on a regular basis with no hint of clipping. i like setting my gains that way so my gear is protected from others (and a inebriated version of myself ) i do have to run a 4V capable external crossover, the DRE-A200, to get back to 8 channels, but my noise floor and overall sound quality is better than it was with either processor.

the general downside to using the HU as the active crossover is that you are limited to the EQ in the HU, or an eq for each output. i dont feel like having 8 equalizers, each 30 band, that i won't use all of on each output. with the H701 i was able to take full advantage of all six 31-band eq channels (since Front 1 and Front 2 used the same EQ - i ran tweeters to Front 1 and midbass to Front 2, giving me a gap, then midrange to Rear so the mid had a dedicated 31-band EQ). i really liked that feature and it was awesome for fine-tuning tonality in the sound system.

    /novel

in short, the 9887 is one of the better Alpine head unit's i've owned (i've owned close to 20 different models). sadly, it lacks some of the features of the modern Pioneers (but has a better menu structure IMO).

i too have heard more negative things about the KTX-100EQ than positive. that is why i want to try one. to verify the issues aren't just user error, or the general lack of usability. i am used to using software to integrate with equipment. while i'm a tweaker at heart, i have full access to several different RTA's and the ability to tune myself. from what i understand, you really need to just sit down with an RTA to manually tweak

have you been helped by me? i'd love to know. shoot me a PM.
