Smaller Pulley for my 200amp alt from excesamp.com

I am having a couple of problems with my 200amp HO alt from excessiveamperage.com.

I installed it and gave it a load test, came up around 192 amps which is fine. The problem is that it doesnt kick in until around 850 RPM and my 2000 blazer idles at around 600RPM. So at idle my alt my alt isnt even giving out 14 volts, until the idle hits ~850 the car is running at 12 volts.

Also, when I do rev up the engine I am only gettin around 13.8 volts, occasionally ill hit 14. Shouldnt it be around 14.4???

My buddy got a HO alt and also put a smaller pulley on it so it revs up higher, especially at idle. But he says it cost him around $160. Would a smaller pulley really cost that much??

Is there anything wrong with my alt????????????

IIRC, the voltage regulator controls how high the voltage is. 13.8 is probably just the default setting, and could be upped to 14.5 or even 15.

    were having the same problems.

We adjusted the idle with the set-screw on the throttle body. We were getting ~13.8-14.1V's with the stocker. But the new one isnt much higher, which is most-likely due to the factory regulator, my buddy was thinking of adding a resistor or calling Nathan about a different pulley..

...and I dont see a pulley being anywhere near that expensive..

I dont want to raise my idle, because i drive alot of stop n go traffic, and i only get 11.8 MPG as it is right now (another problem I desperately need to fix. I have no idea why my 4.3l V6 in a 2dr suv is gettin under 12 MPG. Only engine work is dual flowmasters and a 60 dollar Intake setup).

I know the voltage regulator controls the max voltage, do you think the guy from exces amp.com (i think its nathan, real nice guy BTW) could send me a new voltage reg that I can install? Or do you think i should take the one out my stock alt, because my stock alt was giving out 14,4.

Also, anyone have any idea where to get a smaller pulley so I dont have to mess with my idle?????

Re: Smaller Pulley for my 200amp alt from excesamp.com

I have a '90 s-10, so i had a similar problem. I know you don't want to adjust the screw, but its pretty much the only feasible solution.

I almost had a smaller pulley on ebay, but i didnt have the money for it. It was ~$20, and call some other alternator places, some may have a smaller pulley.

As for the idle, it really doesn't affect gas mileage. I turned mine up just enough to where the alt turns on when my truck is just sitting there in park. In stop and go traffic i either just put it into neutral (the RPM's go up enough to keep the alt on), or i just two-foot it (one foot on the brake, one on the gas), to keep the RPM's up.

It's really not that big of a deal.

Yea my alt kicks in when i have it in park most of the time, but when I am at a red light with it in drive and my foot on the brake, its off. I would definitly spend 20 to get a smaller pulley. How did you find it on ebay?

I just did an "alternator pulley" search. But i actually haven't found another one since.

Call a few of the other alternator places and see if anybody has em.

Re: Smaller Pulley for my 200amp alt from excesamp.com

My EA alt did the same thing in my 95 camry. Then i totalled it and busted the bearings on the alternator so i guess now i dont have to worry about it. . .

Theres a site that sells a 1 3/8" pully and that will increase your idle by 12.5% but i forgot where it was or how i got to it. Search for 4-groove 1 3/8 pulley and maybe you'll find somethin

Re: Smaller Pulley for my 200amp alt from excesamp.com

get in touch with nate. i had the same problem when i got my alt. my engine idles is very low, around 500rpm. it would read around 12v unless i rev past 900rpm. to solve the problem, i sent the alt back to nate and he modified the stator and added a resistor. i can now maintain around 14.6v at idle.

if interested, i posted various readings with loads. i don't have a clamp meter so i could only measure voltage with my dmm.

same problem with my 200 amp EA. as a temporary fix i turned my idle up to about 950, but that ***** with my engine. its freakin loud. and it tends to idle a bit higher for the first 30 seconds or so when i start it, its like 1500 rpm, i look like a fool.
