    Options

Okay guys I need your help. I sold my CX64's and CD-1 Pro's and now I'm on the hunt for a new comp set. Here's the options I'm looking at.

    1)Focal K2 165 KP's $400 (authorized).
    2)Phoenix Gold ti 6's $360 shippped (unauthorized).
3)D.Y.I. set some lotus mid's and Vifa tweets.
    4)CDT HD-62's $320 shipped authorized.

Those are my options as of now what do you guys think I should go for. Opinions, suggestions, let me know what you think. They will be powered by an ESX Q1752 and going in my 2004 maxima. Stock locations for now, any other questions let me know.

    Re: Options

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys, I really appreciate the help. In the end I made my decision based on a few factors, value, warranty and plain old what I could hear in person. So without further ado this is what I purchased.....

I got a chance to audition a couple of comp sets this afternoon. I heard CDT HD-62's and they were nice, mid's were a little too laid back and I wasn't 100% happy with the tweets.

MB Quartz QSD's (don't remember the model # but supposedly the highest set). I loved the mid's but the tweeters in the install that I was listening to were just too much. Now I know that these can sound so much better because I heard them in a forum members car and they were amazing so I'll blame this on install. In the end I didn't go with them because I couldn't get them authorized for the price I wanted.

Diamond Hex's with the silk tweeter option. I wasn't impressed with these at all. I heard them both in a sound room and in a car. Both setups well installed and both setups dissappointed. For a silk I found the tweeter to be harsh and sibilant. The mid's were ok and pounded out a ton of mid bass but the mid range was shaky at best.

Finally I took a good listen to the Focal K2 Power 165 KP's. I got a hold of some really well recorded CD's and listened to them both in a sound room and in a car. The car install was installed in stock locations just like mine would be. Although the sound room install was nicer (of course) the car install was excellent. The tweeter was a tad on the bright side but I'm sure that I could fix that. The mid bass and mid range was the best mix out of the set's that I heard. In the end it was the performance, value ($400 authorized) and warranty that made my decision.

    Re: Options

i'd say you picked the right one's...thought w/o hearing ne of them it is tuff to say....as long as your satisfied thats all that counts...
as for the titanium(?)(metal of sorts)tweets, i have heard they are extremely bright but can be calmed down with an eq,ect...
the midbass i HEAR sounds best in kicks or door pods, but give ampel mid bass rather it be enclosed or in a ib setup.....

    Re: Options

I would like to build kicks for them eventually but for now they'll go in the stock locations. But yeah kicks and A-pillar pods are definately in my future. Out of all of the comp sets that I heard the other day these were my favorites.

    Re: Options

I have focal 165A access's and I love them for rock and techno...I have found that my mids do not however, like rap beats. That is the only complaint I would have with my setup...the midbass for rap is horrible, not to happy with them at all actually. So tell me how those sound, b/c I am actually thinking about selling mine and upgrading.
