    the cda-7998 and 7897 both play mps on cdr and cd-rws
    the 7998 does not have an internal amp, the 7897 does
    its 200 or so cheaper i can get prices for you

    I have a Alpine 7995. When you put the disc in it takes several seconds to read it and when you switch between songs there is about a 4 second gap instead of the usual 2.

    Also, when you pause a song, and then unpause it, there is about a 2 second gap for it to start again, but only if you leave it paused for longer than 10 seconds or so. I have NO idea why!

    I have not noticed any difference in the sound quality from a normal cd.
