Re: New Car Audio Store Looking for some advice.

Well, to sell gear you are going to have to carry stuff that people are familiar with.

    Headunits:

    Pioneer
    Alpine
    JVC
    Jensen
    Eclipse

    Amps:

    Kicker
    JBL
    Pyramid/Legacy/Pyle/other low end crap
    Eclipse
    Zapco
    Rockford Fosgate
    Alpine
    Power Acoustic
    Profile

    Speakers:

    Alpine
    JL
    Pioneer
    Infinity
    Diamond
    Boston Acoustics
    Rainbow
    Focal
    Eclipse

    Subs:

    Kicker
    JL
    Pyramid/Legacy crap
    Infinity
    Alpine
    Eclipse
    (and the other speaker companys)

Mainstream sells....and low end stuff sells great. Mix in some decent mid level stuff and maybe a brand or two of "high end" stuff to hit all the markets Niches. Problem is, big companies like Pioneer and Alpine usually have high initial order requirements and minimum sales quotas.

There are some "internet brands" like Resonant Engineering and Adire Audio that people on here are going to tell you to get. Problem with those companies are that they are not going to be known by your average customers the same way the Kicker and JL are.......best to leave the "unknown" brands alone until you are one your feet.

I'd look into American Bass. www.americanbassusa.com

My friend owns a shop, and he seems to be selling a TON of American Bass gear...

Re: New Car Audio Store Looking for some advice.

I'd look into totally postponing your opening date until spring. If you don't know about lines right now then don't expect it to happen overnight. With the new gear being unveiled in the beginning of January, you will be opening with "last years models" as well, these just happen to get heavily discounted by the manufacturers in January to clear room for the new models. Best word of advice for you as a business owner myself (of a car audio store) is to head back to the business plan dude. Do more research, what if you can't get the lines you want and have to take a third tire line? Will you make it selling Sparkomatic? Do more research before you arbitrarily go out on a spending spree. Some of these companies will require $10000.00 orders for you to be a dealer. This times 5 lines = a lot of money being spent in a hurry.

Re: New Car Audio Store Looking for some advice.

    Yah, what he said ^

I had a home stereo shop long ago, and found out fast that you can go broke trying to stock high end components. And like forbidden says, they change every year and you get stuck with stuff you can't sell.

I see a lot of small car audio shops handling Memphis gear. They seem to be a brand that has respectable quality at reasonable prices, and I'm betting that their profit margin is good.

People will come to you for expert installs and custom work that they can't get at chain stores. In my own business it was repairs, service and installations that brought people in. Having the technical skills to handle stuff nobody else could. Sales was a sideline that rarely paid the bills.

Re: New Car Audio Store Looking for some advice.

yeah man u have to reasearch ur prodcut good and know them good. I mean u will have to stock like mid grade stuff to get on ur feet. I mean stuff u kno u can push out the door. And try to hook up a car club cus they have members and can get the word out about ur shop. But u have to watch the big companies at the begging cus when my boss got a contract form lighting audio they required that u order $10,000 of equipment from them a month. But u can still carry equiment like re and still do great.

Cus when this audio shop first opened up they use to carry lightining audio before they got big and did just amps. And they are doing great. But they also had build a brand new building, so i think they where rich or got a great big loan.

but good luck man. I hope u will stay open for many years.

Re: New Car Audio Store Looking for some advice.

Something to think about that would be interesting......start up a service only stereo shop. Help customers design their systems, and then order the equipment they decide on from some of these internet dealers (with no warranty mind you) and charge the customer a percentage of the total order price for the "service" of designing the system and ordering the products for them. Contact some of the internet dealers, and see if they would cut you a break on prices if you used them regularly, and do the same thing with these internet companies like RE and Adire. And concentrate on installs...installing the equipment that these dumbfuck kids order off of the net and can't find anywhere to install it for them, plus you could install the gear for the customers who you helped design the system for. You would basically be something similar to an independent insurance agent or independent stock brokerage firm. If somebody walks in with a question...charge them to answer it (like a doctor or mechanic). And find an electronics specialist who will work part time for you and do repairs and service and such "on the side" for you.

I don't know....just a thought. With the way things are currently going, the old brick-n-mortar shops are going to have to start doing something different and change with the times.................

No offense, but it seems like you really should be doing quite a bit more research before you decide to open a store...
