Well, my buddies sister wants me to help her with a sub setup for her late '80s Mustang Hatchback. She has ~$300 to spend in total. This isn't going to require mind-numbing bass, but it will need to be loud enough to be impressive yet still sound good. And I want to try to avoid egay for numerous reasons on this. So this is what I have come up with so far:
The amp doesn't need to be super high power since she isn't a huge basshead and so it won't tax the electrical system. I have a brand new in box Soundstream Rubicon 302 (pre-Rubi II) sitting around that I am thinking about selling her for $135. I think it beats most other amps in the price range in terms of build quality and flexibility (will easily do 300w or more into either 4ohm or 2ohm mono), plus it won't tax her electrical system too badly.
I need the sub to respond fairly well to low power yet still get loud, so I was thinking of porting a single 12". Since it's a hatch, space is kinda at a premium so something like a Tempest won't work. My list of subs so far:
IDQ D2v2 - Buy from SD with a pricematch to carmedia1 - $139
Adire Audio Shiva - $125
RE RE12 - Don't know price and I'm afraid the 302 will be too much power.
Dayton Titanic 12" MKII - $150 (unless the MkIII is THAT much better)
I will probably layout the cash myself for wiring and MDF for the box (gotta make a good impression on her ) if needed, so I'm not super worried about the cost.....but if I could get a sub/amp and still have $$ left over for wiring/box material that would be cool too.
So, will all those subs work well off of that power and in a smallish ported box? Any other subs/amps I should be looking into? What subs from the above would you choose?
Thanks, and sorry it's so long
