Help me find a new headunit

I had an eclipse cd8053. I bought it from good guys a month ago for $430 including installation. I never came around to installing it. Unfortunatly, I decided to return the hu on the grounds that I needed one of the three: mp3, cd changer, or satelite radio. For the cd8053 satelite radio is not available, cd changer is $300 and mp3 costs $400 extra. Right now my eyes are on an cd8454 (if I can get it for $100 under msrp which is nearly impossible), cd5444, or a pioneer premiere mp860. I found an authorized shop which has the premiere 860 for $520.

The pioneer has 6.5v pre outs, would that be comparable to eclipse's 5v preouts? One thing the 860 has a 24bit dsp as well as time alignment, parametric equalizer, etc. some features I would compare to the cd8454, minus the memory stick & iserve.

I run satellite radio with my CD8053. I have a clarion sirius receiver, and a separate controller. It works great(so great, in fact, that I am in no hurry for eclipse's sirius tuner to come out).

Since you already returned it(you got a great price on it, btw), I would get the 8454 or 5444. After those, I would get the pioneer premier.

Re: Help me find a new headunit

which clarion deck are you using?

Yeah, I know it was a good deal. However, after looking at how much I have spent, I need at least one of those three alternate sources to be somewhat integrated with the head unit for a total of $500 or less. There is a local shop selling the premier 860 on ebay for $354 and I can do local pickup. So that is a major plus towards the premier.

The even though the pioneer has 6.5v preouts, time alignment, 13 eq, auto eq, etc, does the 5v 5444 still sound better? What would make it sound better? I am probably going to go to tweeter one of these days and do a head to head listening test.

Ok, I can get 860mp for $380. I can get the eclipse 8454 from the same dealer for $140ish more including installation. The thing is this dealer isn't eclipse authorized, but he is buying the deck from an authorized dealer and reselling it to me. Is that ok to do? His shop looked clean and everything, unlike many ghetto shops around here.

Re: Help me find a new headunit

I think I am going to go for the 8454. I dont know why, but the fact that it doesn't have a detachable face plate, high volt preouts, and memory stick seem to sell me on the deck. One dilema is that I plan on cutting off my Double Din face plate to my factory radio and use velcro or magnets to hold it on top of the aftermarket hu so that it looks factory when parked. This would require the hu to be mounted .5"-1" recessed. My dilema lies in who I should get to do this.

Two shops are giving me a good deal on it. Shop A is authorized, but they are just your regular car stereo install shop. I have never dealt with them, but the guy seemed very nice and was one of the very few shops to have an 8v eclipse deck hooked up to the sound board. The shop B is a bit bigger and is more on the custom end, but they are not eclipse authorized, nor do they deal with eclipse products. I talked to shop B and they said they can get the 8454 from one of their friend's shops who is authorized. I questioned about warranty and they told me they will take care of it, if eclipse rejects me for whatever reason they will pay out of pocket. I have purchased from shop B in the past, I bought an image dymanics subwoofer from them, and they gave me a good price on some wires I needed for my install 2 years ago.

Not that I doubt eclipse in their quality, but when my dad bought his maxima, the dealer installed a pioneer rf cd changer and the stupid thing crapped out after 2.5 years, then 6 months afterwards when it was repaired. I always thought pioneer was a good company, but it shows things can happen.

Also, I need some interconnects. Shop A sells JL Audio interconnects, he says they are better than monster cable which was what I was considering buying. Anyone have any suggestions on interconnects for 6 channels for around $110 maximum.

    Unrealli,

I would buy from the authorized shop(and let them install it to bump your warranty to 3 years and add the 1 year anti-theft warranty). You will be assured of factory warranty that way.

Re: Help me find a new headunit

Good advice that you should take. If Eclipse catches wind of what shop B is doing, it will not be long before shop ? that sells it to shop B will no longer be able to carry the Eclipse line. As much as I like my freinds restaurant, sometimes I eat somewhere else.

    Yeah, whatever

Yeah, you are right. I will play it safe and go to shop A.

One last question, which interconnects are better? Monster cable Interlink® MicroXLN® (6 Channel) or a set of 4 channel and 2 channel JL's. Monster cable: $100, JL $120.

    Unrealli,

You don't have to spend that much $$$$ on RCAs. You can if you want to, but it isn't necessary.

Re: Help me find a new headunit

Cool thanks. Power wire is running on the left side. Rca's will be on the right. Speaker wires will run down the middle. Remote wire will be somewhere in between all of that..lol. As far as I know, that is probably the best configuration I can do. The amp will be mounted at the top of the trunk (not the part that opens, but the part directly underneath the rear glass.

Just bought a 6 channel monster cable off ebay for $60. That should be good enough. My pac swi-x (factory steering wheel audio control interface) is already in the mail. Ohh, I can't wait..finals are over on wednesday, then the fun begins....
