So how bad is it guys??

I have been trying to track down a parasitic drain on my X5 so I pulled all audio.

I figured I'd pop the eD 13av2 out of the box and see how it's holding up and check my internal connections on the enclosure.

I was disappointed to find this.

There are 3 tears on this area of the sub not sure what is called?? they are about an inch long in 3 separate places.

Now before I was having issues it sounded like it was playing fine. I don't notice any bottoming out or weird sounds.

What's is this component called spider? Is it totally screwed? Is it fixable?

    What's the score?

I've only been running it a couple of months on my 1200W RMS nak PA1500.
In a 2.4cube SMS box tuned at 33hz

I know those subs had horrible softparts.... I'd prolly just run it til it starts to bottom out bad and get a recone....... I guess idk for sure if there is a way to fix it or not but I don't think so...

Talk to @SPLaudio or psi and see how much a recone would run you. I wonder if there is a easy "bandaid" for that though... Maybe a type of glue or silicone? Once again, I don't build subs. But recones are usually pretty reasonable.

I had a bigger tear in my DC's spider and it lasted a long time so I'd run it till it gives you noticeable problems than get redone. I ran two of the ed 13.5's a few years ago, loved them, i'm guessing so did the a.hole that stole them, lol

The coil is that copper pole in the middle?
Why is it bad if it "rocks"? And what will happen from that?

Well then. The answer is. No. Don't play them any longer.

How do you break the spiders? Bottoming out the sub mechanically? Or thermally?

When you push any tube (round) shape back and forth in a linear motion at some point it "dimples" as you will see with surrounds. When the spider rolls dimple they can crack at those dimple points over time.

You can also damage them with excessively hot lead wires; that is also true. You will see many older "floating lead" woofers would get burn marks / rub marks from those style leads. Leads sewn between spider layers (DD style) or INTO the fabric (TC Style) are also bad for ripping out or cutting spider layers.

The ED spiders are pretty infamous for that as the material is cheap so cannot handle hardly any dimpling before cracking.
