WTF just happend?

So i got a btl sub with re mt motor, and when i got it, instead of having 2 wires coming from the sub, you know pos. to post, neg to neg, then run to amp, he had 4 wires coming from the sub and each voice coil going to its own side on the amp.. and i didnt like having 2 sets of wire for one sub, so i just wired it positive to positve on sub, and negative to negative, then one set of wire to amp..well after i did that, now no sound from sub, and its hard as hell and if u cut it up it makes a loud popping sound like its blown. coil still looks good but wtf is wrong? shouldnt it be the same as how the guy had to before?

Is it quad coil or dual coil? And what is the resistance of each coil?

I bet your voice coils are wired out of phase. one wants to move out at the same time the other wants to move in. hook up a 9v battery to each sets of voice coils separately, if it moves outwards, mark the + a + and do it with the next one. now that you know both pos are pos and both neg are neg, wire that **** up right. wiring up each VC with its own wires will get more power to it from the amp.

First, please clear up your sentences..It's killin' me trying to understand.. You were saying there were how many wires total? And it's a DVC or QVC? I'm confused.

D4. and so instead of 2 wires going to the amp, it was 4. so each coil going to its own side. i wire it so im only using one set of wires and the **** didnt make no sound..and i felt it,hard as hell

d2 Voice coil. so there are 2 sets of terminals right..well, each terminal went to its own channel on the amp when he gave me the sub. so instead of only 2 wires coming from the sub (wiring the sub down to 1 ohm) he had one positive wire go to the left positive on the amp, and the other terminals positive going to the right positive on the and, also the same for the negatives. so it was like one coil was left, the other was right. and instead of having the coils sep. i connect the coils pos. to pos, then to amp pos. and then neg to neg and then to the amp

Yep, try this. Or recheck your wiring, something may be shorted. Even a single strand could possibly do it, so check them well.

does it matter that i took the wires out of the amp and its still stiff? and also i did double check the wire and it was correct. is it completely gone

Ummm, subs are stiff....

Check the resistance of each coil with a DMM.

maybe try one set of coils at a time. you don't gotta bump it, but baby steps to iron out your problem. get sound coming off it with one, then swap to the other. make sure the sub is moving in the correct direction in each coil you check (that battery test will let you know the polarity). is your amp going into protect at all? it would be nice to compare VCs with a meter..

take a D battery and touch the positive side to one coils positive, and the negative side to that same coils negative lead. the sub should move out. then do the same for the otherside. if they both move the same way, youre not wired out of phase.

any battery should work.. when we can start adding up what we have and subtracting the things we don't, we can figure out this problem. right now we just think our wiring is ok, assuming everything is supposed to work, yet it doesn't. i think everyone following here would agree. edit: and the amp is not going into protect.

I still think his VCs are out of phase. I did this by mistake once and it acted just as ben is describing. I swore up and down I had it wired correctly too, because I just had it working!
