instant termination and withhold current paycheck for recuperation of stolen business. a friend of mine posted an installers entire tool box with tools on craigslist, after tool box was picked up and sold, guy came in to work and fired guy and had police escort him off the premise.

It's smart on a personal side from business, but as an owner you really have to trust the guy. If he's doing a couple side jobs but a ton of installs in the shop, it's good exposure for business. If he's being a shyster and taking it all outside of my shop I'd kick him the the fukkin curb.

If I owned a shop, that is...

That's a tough one. Like mylows said, as long as he's not taking business from the shop. You also have to see that times are tough and that sometimes we do what we gotta do to make some extra cash. When I worked at RadioShack a long time ago, people would ask me to help them install stuff all the time, but store policy was to not get involved in stuff like that because it can reflect negatively.

as long as they aren't prospecting the customers at the shop then myself or anyone else as a owner cannot tell him that he cant do installs on his own time .it's the law .now if he's actually taking money or customers from the shop , then yes fired !

i dont think there's any way around these guys not taking money from a shop every install he does is one less customer coming in to your shop,i just think if you do this for a living you should be held to a different standard

Word of mouf, d. Only takes one guy going into his entourage with a wickedly done system before their friends want the same stuff. I'd rather sacrifice one customer to earn 5 in return. I'd probably even give the installer a referral bonus

If they do 3 nice installs on the side a month and it brings in 20 more customers wanting them to install its a win. Thats what I did but with paint

interesting, it works goof for me because there are not many decent shops around where I live and so I post ads like crazy on craigslist, saying that I install, build boxes, blah blah, and I make a decent amount of money off of it.

It's just like any other industry; you're only as powerful as the clientele you build and, unfortunately, it's word of mouth that builds the car audio installs shop. You don't necessarily have to be phenomenal to produce volume, but if enough people see your quality, they'll see you even if you're more than your competitors.

actually this is not true .it does mean they'll be coming to his specific shop.so is he supposed to send his family and friends to said shop instead of doing it himself.not really .there's a fine line here .you cant fire someone for doing side work ,but like i said if he is actually take patrons from the shop then yes .if not and you cant prove it and you fire him and he hears of why he was fired ,then BIG LAW SUIT ,he will then own the shop when he is done.

My concern would be that he's using shop tools and/or install equipment.

    Re: car audio store owners

This is what is called a 'Conflict of Interest'

I'm a cable guy, I always have people asking me to do work for them. Most want stuff free, so I tell them no. I could not use my company issued tools, truck, supplies to do work in a person's house. I could use my own, however.

When you are taking business from your employer, you are risking a lot, depending on your employer. Do you really want to **** off the guy who signs your paychecks?
