im wondering if ratings is a factor? do you look for high rms?
Assuming that you currently don't look at specs and ratings, do you choose subs solely based on size and looks?
Make sure ot has a Skar Audio logo.
Well the power handling RMS relates to how much power the sub can handle.
For most people 500-1k rms is more than sufficient unless you want to get loud.
You also have to consider the impedence of the sub and the stability of the amp...
To write everything you should know about this would take a very long time.
I'll give you a brief overview.
When you build a system there are many things to consider.
First and formost is your budget, this hobby can get expensive quickly.
If you are not looking to keep things <500$ your probably not going to be running much more than 1,300 watts.
The reason for this is above 1,300 watts (for your total system) you are most likely going to need some electrical upgrades.
Basically the stock electrial system for your vehicle will not be able to adiquately power your system.
For a starting system 2 - 500w subs would be a good option (1K rms total). Along with an amp that can adiquately power them. For me a bass control knob is also a must.
There are a lot of good videos on youtube which can get you up to speed on the proper installation of amps/subs.
You need to decide what your application is, how much power you have on tap, and how much space you can use then go from there.

Are you looking to do a single woofer?
What is your goal of this system: Loudness (SPL) or Sound quality(SQ) or both...
Your going to need to find an amp which can drive those depending on your choise. The first choice is probably the best for a beginner.
Get a custom box made by one of the boxbuilders here. (I use starr mountain sound).
And Copper Clad Aluminum (with a 200 or 250 A fuse)
Also you would need rca cables (http://www.knukonceptz.com/productMa...tegory=Krystal RCA Kables), and preferably a deck which has rca outputs.

This is dependent on tastes. I for one like the music to be reproduced the way it is, without any excesses screaming at me. When a bass guitar string or kick drum is played, I want it to blend with the rest of music, I want them to sound naturally, not like there is an earthquake when a certain part of music is played. So high RMS and xmax by itself will not sway my choice. Some things to consider.. has anyone tested the subwoofer with a Klippel and verified that the reported T/S paramemters are true, that BL/LE/ etc are symmetric over the stroke? Does subwoofer have low distortion? Does subwoofer have any treatment for controlling inductance? Also, I like sealed box subs, and I would prefer the subwoofer to have reasonable qtc in a compact box. 1.4cube box is the most I'd consider for a 12 inch subwoofer, but would prefer close to 1cu ft.. A lot of subwoofers will not pass this requirement.. regardless of what manufacturers recommend. I will also give some points to subwoofer that achieves a given SPL with less power, simply for the sake of running amps cooler and car's charging system happier. Finally, the most important thing to consider is the word of mouth.. with audio equipment you can't always go by specs alone. Often, they will not convey the whole picture. You cannot read from the specs whether the subwoofer has low distortion or good transient response.
also when u find out what kinda sub and amp u want check ur local craigslist u can get them for alot cheaper, at the cost of a warranty of course as long as that doesnt bother u.....treat ur stuff well and u shudnt have a need for it anyway
