Problem with the passats is shallow clearances in the doors so I don't know if they'll fit without modification (even with mdf rings) so I'm already anticipating having to cut the doors.

Once you get a substage you'll be bit by the audio bug, you'll wanna get louder then louder again then louder again...and so forth lol
That's rough. Makes the learning curve pretty steep for a DIY but it's definitely valuable knowledge to have. My ultimate goal after retirement is to do installs for fun. Just build a word of mouth reputation around town. That is as long as the economy makes a turn for the better and people still care about upgrading their systems in 15 years.
Yep it wont go away either... Youll eventually try to quit but then youll say "O well just put in a head unit in this car" then its right back to installing everything again...
