what to expect from my budget system..? (newbie)

hi everyone, i'm new here...i was just wondering what to expect from my cheap system. i bought everything months ago but only now am i able to install it (was waiting to get a cd player and tried to find someone who could custom install in my old car for cheap).

i know they might be crap but here's what i have: 2 10" polk audio dx10 subs (can take 300w continuous i think), lightning audio b.400.4 4ch amp (i think it puts out 200W RMS per channel when bridged), and i plan to pick up a pioneer deh-1600 today or tomorrow.

i've heard mixed reviews on the lightning audio amp and also read that the polks are meant for sound quality and don't get too loud.

so what kind of bass can i expect from this setup, is it at least decent? just curious. i plan to get it all installed in my old 81 celica within the next few days. and also, how would this setup compare to my friend's cheap (well at least his seems like it) 12" RF punch Z?

sorry for the long post and please excuse my stupidity. thanks in advance.

Ur setup will be clean and power. I have a lightning audio B.200.2 and it slamed my sub. The polk speaker are SQ orentened. But what kinda box are they going in.

It will be ok. Those subs will be underpowered, so you won't be getting maximum spl from them. Polk subs are pretty decent, so you shouldn't be too disapointed. The amp will be the bottleneck of the system. Just be careful setting the gains, it may seem louder with the gains cranked, but its really just damaging your equipment.

Re: what to expect from my budget system..? (newbie)

kool, thanks for the info. the subs are in a sealed box. by the way, one of the subs is missing the set of foam pads that were supposed to seal the space between the outer lip or whatever of the sub and the box...does anyone know where i might find this since i hear that it's important if the subs are to sound good..?

so with a better amp these subs will be sound nicer? i saw a cheap power acoustik LT1920 (370W RMS x 2) online somewhere, i think for $170 or so...is that a good amp? and if it is, would it be safe to use with the polks even if i turn down the gains?

oh and one more question (hehe sorry for another long post), how do i go about turning up the gains on my current amp, i don't wanna be damaging anything on the subs.

    thanks in advance.

To set the gains turn the HU up to about 3/4 volume. Then slowly turn the gain control up (clockwise) until you begin to hear distortion, sometimes its hard to notice. But you should never really be above 3/4. Also if you use bass boost, don't use much, and compensate by turning the gain down alittle bit. Yes a new amp would help. But for that money you can get better. JBL 600.1 comes to mind.

Re: what to expect from my budget system..? (newbie)

is the quality of the JBL amp better than the power acoustik or is it more powerful? my 2 subs are 4 ohm, so i'm not sure if it'll be good for them. i looked up the jbl 600.1 amp at ikesound and it said it had 300x1 @ 4ohms and 600x1 @ 2ohms. is it underrated or is this bad info? i thought the power acoustik one that gave 370x2 @ 4ohms (assuming it's of decent quality) would have been a better deal? let me know what you think. thanks.

I am not familiar with Power Acoustik. The JBL is underrated, and you would be running your subs wired in parallel to 2ohms. So they would be getting about 325 a piece roughly.

The JBL amps are a little underrated! I think I saw that that particular JBL amp put out 600+ watts! JBL is a VERY GOOD budget amp!

Re: what to expect from my budget system..? (newbie)

kool. i was just kinda worried that my subs wouldn't safely take a 2ohm load. does anyone know if they can?

another question: the deh-1600 that i'm planning to get (on a tight budget) only has one preamp output (rear)...can this output be used for the subs? or should i even get this head unit (it's a newer version of the deh-1500, it seems) ? if i was to install component speakers later, would i be able to find good amps that take the hi level speaker input or whatever, since the single rca output would be used for the subwoofers already or could i just split that single rca signal..?

    thanks again.

Re: what to expect from my budget system..? (newbie)

    they are 4 ohm SVC

looking to spend 100-125. the deh-1600 is 109.99 at best buy and comes with free speakers (although these speakers won't fit my car, i might use em for my van if they fit). i was interested in a clarion head unit at fry's electronics..it was 99.99, i think it was a zx435 or something. don't know if they still offer it at fry's. fry's also has the deh-1600 for 109, but no extras. a volume knob would be kool to have on a cd player, but not many of those types would fit in my budget.
