carpet pad as sound deadener

my dad does carpet and i was telling him how i was gonna buy dynamat or some sort of sound deadener and he said carpet pad would work just as good..what do you guys think? i can get as much and as thick as i want for free. wouldnt it be pretty much like the same thing?

It'll probably help, but it won't have the same dampening abilities as something that actually sticks to and adds mass to the rattling panels.

it will stick he has pad glue too.. he said i could get this real dense pad

I think it would work fairly well. Why don't you do something small that you know rattles badly, and see for yourself. You can always rip it off, hopefully.

If you can glue it too I'd say go for it and see what happens. Just make sure the glue can handle extreme temperatures.

Works quite well.

Carpet Padding and Premium Body Shop Grade 3M Rubberized Undercoating have been my weapons of choice in all my vehicles, past and present.

Never had a problem with carpet padding, plus it is generally more cost effective than most dynamat counterparts.

thats what my dad said he said i can put rubber underneath and then pad...glad to hear it works..and yes its a lot cheaper considering i can get both for free instead of $100-300 for soundproof materials

Yeah carpet pad definately helps, but I wouldn't say as much as fatmat or dynamat extreme, or any of the others. Simply because it doesn't add as much mass, and the fatmat has a metal sheet on it to reflect vibrations. If it works for you, it works.
