Icon32 Help Picking System Components for a 98 Explorer

    Hello,

I just bought a '98 Ford Explorer XLT and I'm looking to put a system, budget excluding deck is no more than $1500.00.

So far I've decided on the following:

Deck: Alpine 9815 (On sale for $325 at a local shop).

    Subs: 2 x 12" Kicker L7 4ohm

    Amp: 1 x 1200.1 Kicker Amp

5x7 Door Speakers: Not sure here, Kicker, JL, Infinity, Alpine, JBL? They all have similar specs. What's best sounding? I'm looking to buy for a max of $100/pair online.

Box: SubZoneUSA Vented Dual L7 box. Is this any good?

Thanks for any advice. I like the kicker stuff a lot. The L7s can be had for $350/pair online and the amp for $400. All without warranty, of course. Though if you want the subs with a warranty you have to spend twice as much. I'd rather take my chances and on the off chance it blows, replace it with another $175 dollar sub.

    Thanks,
    Brian

for your 5x7's of the ones you mentioned i would go with the infinitys but if you wanted to spend a little more money i would try to put some cdt cl-61 components in there. there is a sale on them at thezeb.com. on those kicker l7's if you are interested i got 2 rockford hx2's dual 4 ohm coils instead of the l7's i'll sell them to ya for $145 shipped

Thanks for the offer, but I like the kickers :-D

By components do you mean separate tweeter and midrange? Is this the kind that requires a more complex installation because there are multiple parts to the speaker?

it's not more complex. you just take the 2 wires going to the speakers hook them to the crossover then you got 4 wires coming out of the crossover going to the tweeters and midrange. with the 6.5 components you will get better midbass because a round speaker can produce better bass than an oval plus better highs with the tweeter. too mount them just buy an adapter that fits the 5x7 opening where you can mount a 5.25 or 6.5 driver in it and then find a place too moun the tweeter. you can find these adapters at www.crutchfield.com . it sounds like a lot more work but it really isn't and i bet you will be much happier with components than 5x7's

There are also kickpanel enclosures for components for the explorer. Also they make adaptor plates that will accomodate 6.5 components in place of the 6x8 openings you have.
