    How to improve MP3's?

I recently bought a Kenwood Music Keg in order to completely bypass the need for Cd's. I absolutely love the thing, but as anyone who listens to a lot of MP3's knows, the quality can be shadier than a three dollar bill. Of course, I always download the highest quality tracks available, but mp3's are like hookers, you just never know where they've been. I was wondering if someone could recommend an equalizer or something similar that would help me get the most out of my mp3's. Maybe something from Audio Control? Thanks for the help.

You can EQ it all you want but a crappy source is a crappy source. If it really bothers you I would say rip your own so you know what kind of quality you are dealing with.

Yeah, you'll have to have better source material. I try to use 320kbps MP3s whenever possible, but it seems like the vast majority of people still rip to 128kbps, which more often than not cuts away a lot of the low and high-end notes.

    Re: How to improve MP3's?

I rip mine at 192k 90% of the time and they sound better than every single mp3 I've ever downloaded. I don't know if they get artificially compressed on kazaa or what but I hardly ever get a good song on there, and yes I do search for >=192k. I'm also 99% sure you can't hear the difference between 192-320 but I haven't done any definitive tests yet. Anyway, look up Exact Audio Copy and Lame, both free and they work awesome. Good luck.

    Re: How to improve MP3's?

I've actually had much better results with newsgroups as far as quality and bitrates. Most of what I'm looking for on kazaa is usually at 128 and with the bogus files it's just not worth it anymore. Might be something to look into newsgroups especially if as you say you're looking for a way to bypass CD's. I'm paying $11.99 for 10GB a month, not too bad considering the quality of the mp3's and the retention rate just got longer.

I gave up on downloading music, I'm now in the ripping my own music phase. By my own I mean my friends CD's too.

    Re: How to improve MP3's?

Best way I can describe it is they are bulletin boards or discussion boards where people post to them. Most ISP's offer a limited amount of newsgroups but a newsgroup service is best. After signing on to a service download a program to combine and decode the binary and you're all set. Sounds kinda complicated but once its set up it really is easy. Basically it's file sharing but not peer to peer, files you download and decode stay on your computer and the only way someone else gets a file you have is if you upload it to the server. I wish i could explain it better but I'm not that computer literate but it works great in that I get great bitrates, no bogus files, and with my DSL connection I download 8 at a time at around 162 kbps.

    http://www.newsbin.com/

Your ISP should provide access to a small number of newsgroups, but you'll probably have to pay to get access to the better ones. It basically works the same as a P2P person, only you're not downloading from another person per se, so you don't have to worry about download speeds, being in a queue, having your download cancel, etc. If you download a lot of things, i.e. music, movies, games, apps, etc. etc. it's a good investment, otherwise it's a waste of money in my opinion. Just about everything you'll find on newsgroups you can find elsewhere, it's just not as easy.

The problem with bulletin boards/discussion boards is that they become the repository of copyrighted material. That is the reason that the original Napster went through its legal battles and eventual downfall. The RIAA is all over these collections of "their" copyrighted information. The P2P may be less accurate as far as quality or bogus files, but they are not nearly as large as a central server, which can easily be monitored and held responsible should the RIAA choose to take action.

I'm not advocating or condoning the trading of files, only mentioning that the central server model of the old Napster has a greater chance of attracting trouble than the model in use by the P2P networks of Kazaa, LimeWire, Etc...
