preamp voltage, rms or peak?...

i was just wondering, are the pre amp voltages on HU's rated in rms or peak? is there an industry standard on this, or do manufacturers just come up with there own stuff?
i have a clarion dxz835mp, supposedly has 4v outs, at its full volume, unclipped, will i get 4 volts?
main thing i want to know is how much voltage my unit is putting out, that way i know whether to get a linedriver or not. i also thought that if people knew things, like how much pre amp voltage certain HU's produced, maybe it can be an informative thing for some members (like me ).

Its peak.
At full volume, and clipping you will get 4v.
You could look into a line driver if you really need more voltage. The normal person doesnt need more than 4v like most HUs are rated at.

i dont want to be normal either, heh, but i'm just like that, i look for any excuse to buy something new for my car.
i think i should be fine without a linedriver, my amps only accept 5v.
anyone have an idea how much voltage my deck puts out before clipping? or, whats the easiest way for me to test it myself?

not all are peak #'s matt. i know most high end pioneer, alpine, denon and eclipse h/u's are rms. i know mine is 4v rms but i need a line driver to gimme 18volt:d.

the guy at absound told me the clarion 835 is underrated and puts out true 4v preouts, and then he sed its actually rated at like 4.3v preouts

is there a way to check this with a volt meter? measure one of the rcas.....

I believe the pre outs on those are rated at peak as well. No way is a 4 volt alpine doing 4 volts continuously. The pre out voltage is correlated to the volume control. The higher you crank, the more voltage(which could clip at a certain volume).

Alpine lists their pre out voltage numbers in the owner's manuals as MAX pre out voltage.

There is a guy on another forum who tested his 7897. MAX voltage was 4 volts, not rms. THe sub out MAXED at 3.5 volts. He did his testing with an oscilloscope.Test a deck, any deck that is rated for 4 volts. You won't get 4 volts at 1/4 volume, for example. It is correlated to volume.

Maximum theoretical voltage available from a 14 volt supply is 5 volts RMS or 7 volts peak. If you knock 20% off for circuit losses and feedback you can get about 4 vrms before clipping.

That's going to be with the volume control at 100% and with a 0 db reference source. Volume controls are logarithmic, and voltage changes rapidly near the top. My Pioneer is rated 2.2 volts I think, and at 3/4 volume I get 0.4 volts rms.

You can measure it with a DMM on AC Volts. You need a constant source tone that's 0dB level.
