Can speaker wire be too big?

today i bout a 12' pack of 12G tsunami speaker wire from circut city to wire with my new amp that will hopley come soon, but then i went to a car audio shop to see about a speaker box terminal and the employee ask what kinda sub i had

    me: elemental design
empolyee:hemm... is that one of those internet companies
    me:yea sure(just to get my Q answered)
    employee:how much power
    me:450watts
employee: oh well thats to big of wire that will drain ur power
me: oh yea? can i get my terminal now?

    paid and took off.

so is he right about the power thing? will the new wire i got be bad? or it doesnt really matter?

    thx

Re: Can speaker wire be too big?

"employe:eh well thats to big of wire that will drain ur power"

speaker wire carries the signal from amp to subs. carries power too i believe now dat i m thinkin bout it. hmm, could think a little bit more, but can't right now. hopefully other ppl expand on this so i dont have to think bout it much. but as a conclusion, employee wrong again. err, dont trust employees most of the times. either they really know ****, or they dont.

i dont think there's nothing bad w using 12awg speaker wire. it might be a waste of money to use like 10awg speaker wire on something that only needs like 200watts.
but i think i rather have more or enough than not enough u know.

    No, it doesn't

Every speaker wire has some amount of resistance--bigger wire (lower gauge) has less resistance so that when you wire up a 4 ohm speaker to your amp, it really sees a 4.x load.

Is x negligible in most applications? You bet it is. There's only a .1 dB difference between 12 and 18 gauge wire. Do the math and that means you're gonna let 2% more watts through...

Mlech...102 watts vs. 100, 1020 watts vs. 1000....no big deal

The loss ratio is the same tho, 2% (.09dB). Funny how that works.

I Always Thought The Bigger The Wire The Better Singnal You Get From The Deck To The Amp Then To Your Subs.

Re: Can speaker wire be too big?

not better...copper is copper (lets please not start a thread on that again)

but sometimes..."bigger" example...a 16awg wire can't carry as much "signal" as a 4awg wire could.....but you don't always need bigger either

Uh...I think "copper is copper" has more to do with:

12 gauge Home Depot stuff =~ 12 gauge Phoenix Gold platinum series

    rather than:

    12 gauge anything =~ 18 gauge anything
