    Battery or new alternator first?

Need to do some upgrading, but can't do both at the same time.

Would I benefit more from upgrading the alternator first over the battery? I would pick up a new battery (red top) on my next paycheck.

Or, if I'd be better off getting the battery first, then please let me know. And of course I'll be upgrading all the wiring.

    Thanks.

Depends on your vehicle. American? probably a battery - American cars tend to have fairly beefy alternators. Most Japanese cars tend to have pretty wimpy ones, though, so you might want to go that route if you've got an import, depending on what exactly your stock one does.

It's a 91 explorer.. I think the alt is only 95amps, but they sell a remanufactured one at autozone for a 1995limited that pushes 130amps I believe. A little over $100, and should work just fine with a redtop and a batcap down the road.

Just didn't know what would be the best route to go at this point.. I'm putting a little over 700wrms to my sub, and just want to make an educated 'under the hood' purchase.

well, if they are both near the same price...i'd go with the alternator first, then the red top. I did this in reverse because a new HO 200 amp alt for my truck is $369!! i just went with a red top under the hood first...it can take the "hits" better than a regular lead-acid battery. But, if they're bout the same...go with the alternator first! peace

95 would work fine, but 130 of course would work better ... I wouldn't think either of those upgrades would be "needed" per se, so I'd say do them in whichever order is most convenient for you.

Re: Battery or new alternator first?

Uhhh did no one notice that we're talking about 700 watts here??

A 95 amp alt should be able to provide enough current for 2, maybe 3 of those amps. If you're having starting problems you either have a dying battery or a dying alternator. If your alternator fails generally even a good battery will be dead in a matter of minutes. If your battery's going you might be able to limp it along for several weeks.

If that's the only amp you have and you're not having any starting problems then you have no need what-so-ever to upgrade. If you're having problems, what are they?

Re: Battery or new alternator first?

I will be upgrading in the future.. Bigger amp(s) + component amp. EQ will go in eventually.

I figured it's better to have everything solid now because it's alot easier to beef up when it's not already broken down.

I can get away with a 130amp alt for a little while, but once I start topping 1500watts, I'll look into a higher output one. But that may be a while.

Fords are pretty notorious for having bad batteries, but my alternator seems to be pretty weak too. I can turn the headunit and amp off, and while I'm idling I can see my headlights pulsating.. My dome light does the same when it's on. I can give it a little bit of gas and everything clears up, but I shouldn't have to do that.

Thanks for the responses. I'll probably get the alternator first and see if that solves my light flickering problem. If not, well, I'll have one step taken care of anyway. One less thing to do.
