    Different types of MDF?

Has anyone seen different types of mdf before? The usual kind is one solid color kinda tanish i suppose. Anyone heard of Birch MDF? I was told it has the best acoustic sound out of all the other brands. Please let me know if this is a good quality mdf or not, thanks.

    lol.

    there is birch plywood.

MDF is Medium Density fiberboard...in other words:

    "Sawdust that is glued together"

There is HDF and LDF (also known as "particle board")

MDF does come in a small range of colors. It depends on the glue to sawdust ration and also the saw dust used as different wood is colored different. The glue is what give most the strength so basically the only difference that matters is the thickness

He really burned the wood on the edge there

I can't tell if it looks like MDF or plywood because the pic was taken from too far away.

Could be MDF with a birch laminate or veneer over it ... or a veneer plywood.

yikes, doesnt look like any mdf or box wood ive ever seen... Looks like plywood.. u sure this guy aint yankin ur chain? I mean he did put some good bracing in there, but the wood looks shady..

edit - after looking again, ide say its something other than mdf, it takes a lot of friction to burn MDF while its easier to burn other meterials, also, is that supposed to be ported? i see something that looks like a port, but it looks like that one wall is just blocked off.. Good luck with it..

    baltic birch>MDF

except MDF>baltic birch in terms of price

Hello GSteg it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?

i know the guy who is making the box, he wouldn't lie about the wood he was using. What i was thinking is maybe lowes stamped it wrong. But he has been buying this wood for a while now and making peoples box's. He pays $33 for a sheet of this Birch Veneer MDF 3/4. Which is about twice as much as regular MDF. I do believe veneer is a layer put ontop of wood to make it appear nice. I will get him to take close up pics of the wood next time he is online. and if i need to ill get him to split a scrap piece down the middle to see if it still looks the same inside as it does outside.

yea there is ultra light MDF and regular MDF, but no real difference in color. The birch plywood is real good, but also like 100 dollars a sheet...particle board is the enemy though..make sure it isnt that crap....

    Re: Different types of MDF?

Actually, no, I know what he's talking about - I've used it. It is more expensive, but offers no advantage in car audio (no disadvantage either, however...). It's just exactly what he said; MDF with an ultra-thin layer of birch outside.
