Box broke and was leaking...What did it do?

Sold my Type R today and after I took it out I noticed that the front face separated down at the bottom. The sealant was also pulled away so it was definitely leaking. What would this do to performance? Hopefully it will explain what Ive been noticing over time.

Well, if you can find the leak...seal it up with some caulk or anything else substantial for sealing...leaky boxes are not fun, and sound like ish...seal 'er up

Re: Box broke and was leaking...What did it do?

The whole bottom of the box was most likely leaking. Temporally, I will take it out and fix it until I make a new box.
I want to know on what it ends up doing to the boxes performance. Does it make it hit higher? Lower? Dirty sound? Etc..

well, if the box wasnt ported to start with, it sure is now

seriously though, if you have a hole in a box of any form other than intended, you're just creating another port. But of course, you have no idea what that effect is on tuning and most likely your box is getting closer to becoming a free-air woofer.

Re: Box broke and was leaking...What did it do?

A port with no length is just a hole. I doubt it would create any realistic 'tuning point' anyway, it would most likely just cause turbulence (many times described as a flapping sound and often misdiagnosed as the speaker failing) and alter Qtc.

No speaker, in the history of speakers, has ever been blown by too little power. Ever. I don't care what your friend told you, he's a dirty liar.

Re: Box broke and was leaking...What did it do?

Well as an obvious statement, if its a sealed box and you have a leak.... well then it defeats the design of being a sealed box. Its kinda like having an exhaust leak... your car still works but it looses pressure and doesnt sound good! When i build my boxes i use a bunch of wood screws on every end and use caulk for double security. Ive built one for 4 Jl 13.5's and never had ANY part come loose. Take that into consideration when you build your next one. oh and be sure to predrill for the screws.(helps so the board wont split or crack as easy) Good luck!

You always should glue your boxes.

    Glue is stronger than screws.

you use screws to keep the box together while the glue dries
