I have searched, but I would like individual accounts on WHY they went active, did you go active with 2-way or 3-way, and what was the outcome? Did you gain better quality, get louder, or just more in depth tuning to each speaker

Because all the cool kids are doing it.
Better tuning which leads to better sound quality.

x2 on that. i went active for like 2 months and i just never got everything tuned right. none of the slopes/crossover points that were suggested really sounded that good. and yes you are constantly constantly tuning!
im much happier with my EQ and passive crossover. i might dabble again in the active world but not right now.....
because active is fun. And if you say you're going active on this forum, your e-***** gains about an inch
Got a pm regarding my sig

tuning is much easier when ur passive cause you only have so many options. when ur active its like endless possibilities so it takes forever. like was said before, tuning never ends.
thanks. wont go active. ill just add some 4" to my existing comp set, not crossed over. run the comps and the 4" (mb quart) off an XA5000 once i get my TXA-1000D and ea2000 sold

i went active because i bought HLCD's.
but thats a whole nother bucket of ****. the reason i would want to go active, is because individual OEM speakers by whatever company are less expensive than a component set with lesser quality speakers included. so i can spend the full amount of my budget on each speaker and interchange things when i feel like it, and have the future expandability to do whatever my heart desires with whatever speakers i want to use. i still have another channel of audio output and i have a dedicated 3 way front stage plus the sub. hell. i can run my subs in STEREO if i had a 2 channel amp for it.
its all about the fact that i will never have to mess with buying or using any other crossovers again. once you spend the loot on an active eq\xover system, its all easy from there.
it is even easier to install your system as you only need one RCA from the source unit through the car. in my case, the H701 combo acts as a line driver, and a relay as well - and in the future when i upgrade to a headunit with optical output, i can utilize that feature as well.
for me, its all about future expandability and easy interface. thats why i went with the H701.

Anything you can do with an passive x-over you can do with an active x-over.
What would happen if all of a sudden all component speaker manufacturers stopped including the proper crossovers with their sets? Who would buy them?
