Icon9 Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

First post and sorry I didn't introduce myself in the Introduction area first, but this is the reason why I came here. I need some pro advice.

Here's the system in my Magnum:

Pioneer Premier DEH-P6800MP w/ iPod hookup
2 Infinity Reference 3 1/2's in the dash
2 Infinity Reference 6 1/2's in the doors
2 Infinity Kappa 5 1/4's in the rear in 6x9 brackets
150 Watt P.O.S. but works good Alpine amp (4 channel)
12" Bazooka Sub (friend gave it to me cause my Rockford blew)
The sub and Kappa's are powered by the amp

I know the sub and amp aren't up to certain "standards", but hey it works for me and sounds pretty good.

I have everything tuned perfectly except for the bass. I get more of the low end vibrating type bass than a hard punch type bass. Basically what I want is for my 6 1/2's and 5 1/4's to punch and pick that mid-range bass if that's what it is, while my sub would pick up the low end. If I turn the sub off it sounds like there's no bass at all. Can't I get the speakers to pick up some bass still even though a sub is hooked up? I know of the setting on the sub to it will send a signal to speakers too and I have that on, but I need more bass out of my speakers. I hope you can understand what I mean.

What kind of enclouser do you have sealed or ported? Are the settings on the amp on full or highpass? What kind of pre outs does your deck have.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

Enclosure is sealed. Not ported. (Ported means a hole in it right?) Settings on amp I believe are on either Low Pass or full for the sub and full for the Kappa's. Preouts? I just have 2 sets of preouts I believe and one of em is being used for the rear Kappa's. Does that make sense?

Would a ported box give me more punch?

Yeah a ported will get you that punchy bass.Port it at about 40hz and that will take out most of the low rumble and leave you with a harder bass note.Do you have the crossover tured on on the deck?(40,80,120 i think is what the settings look like on that unit.)Are you using the same rca signal to feed the sub channel as the other speakers?

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

What do you mean by port it at 40hz? Sorry kind of a noob on that one.

And as far as the crossover, are you talking about the hz the sub is putting out? Mine are 50, 63, 80, 100, and 125. Right now it's set 63 and my HPF is set 100 I believe. I'll have to make sure later. And no the same RCA signal is not feeding both the sub and speakers. I'm using "Sub Out" RCA for the sub channel and "Pre Out" 1 or 2 for the speakers.

But even if that ported box gets me more of a punch out of the sub, I want the punch to come from the speakers and the sub to keep the low end just turn it down. I want to feel the punch in the doors and behind me and be able to know and hear that the really low end is coming out of the sub.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

The 6.5s are the only one of your speakers that will even begin to give you that mid bass that you are looking for. Infinitys aren't known to be very punchy. If that hi pass filter that you mentioned is on the amp feeding the mids, turn it down to around to 80 or so and see if sounds any better. You could add deadning to the inner and outer door skins to help with the mid bass as well.

You are getting too much low end out of a single 12" Bazooka in a sealed box? Sell it and buy an IDQ... I guess?

No speaker, in the history of speakers, has ever been blown by too little power. Ever. I don't care what your friend told you, he's a dirty liar.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

    It should have seperate hp/lp.
OP turn your HPF filter off on your deck and see if that puts some bass into your 5 1/4's.As for the bass it will definitly sound like its coming from the sub no problem. An with the HPF off on your deck your 5 1/4 will be recieving the missing bass that you want.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

Make sure your filters are set correctly, first. If that doesn't get you your desired results, you may want to give your 6.5's a more bass-friendly environment. You could start with properly deadening your doors, or building kick panels.

A ported box may or may not get you what you want, but I personally prefer ported over sealed anyday if you have the space for it. You'll increase overall output and frequency range if its done properly. You may also want to consider upgrading your amplifier and your sub - 150 watts dispersed amongst 3 sets of speakers and a sub probably won't get you the bass output your looking for.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

Disconnect the amp from your rears and hook those 6 1/2s up to your amp. Those are really the only speakers you have that can put out any bass. This is my opinion of course, but I think you should amp the fronts, not the rears. After that, look into setting your filters.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

The amp is only powering the Kappa's (5 1/4's) and the sub. That's it. Yah I should amplify the doors, but I don't want to get into that right now. I'll try turning off my HPF on the deck and see what happens. The filter on the sub is set to Low Pass I believe and the filter on the Kappa's is either Full (Direct) or High Pass. So yes, there are 2 seperate controls for the channels on the amp.

Re: Need more punch and less of the low end vibration.

I have a pioneer N-1 and has bout the same controls as yours. If I turn the HPF off I can feel the bass as compared to having it normally set to 50hz.I'm sure this is alot of your problem besides the sub and amp combo. But you will still get decent responce wiht your setup.
