The biggest benefit is the better types allow you to adjust the arrival times of the sound from your front stage (its usually called "time alignment"), which makes the sound from your front speakers seem like its coming from directly in front of you instead of from the doors and/or kickpanels.

Re: what does a sound processor do

To me, it gives you expandibility and MUCH more control over your stereo and you can run an active setup using a processor.

With a processor you have the ability to control the frequencies through which your speakers play; rather than having a passive crossover tell you. And you can always change these settings anytime you want; no more being stuck with what the manufacturer thinks works best even though they've never sat in your car nor know your preferences like you.

From there you can also dial in the way the music sounds via EQ's. Most h/u's come with EQ capabilities but nowhere near as refined as most off-board processors.

Then, finally, you have the ability to control time alignment which is already discussed above.

Re: what does a sound processor do

Any pre-amp device that intentionally alters the sound is a "sound processor". That is a generic term which includes devices such as EQ's and electronic crossovers, DSP's and even line drivers.

We use the term to fit specific devices like the Alpine 701 (or similar) because these devices are so complex that they span many traditionally stand-alone responsibilities.

No speaker, in the history of speakers, has ever been blown by too little power. Ever. I don't care what your friend told you, he's a dirty liar.
