1. ## What the hells is a farad???

Simple question?

2. A farad is a measure of capacitance

3. Ya...Sooo? What is a farad???

Is 1 farad = to holding 1000 watts?

4. A capacitor stores electrical energy in the form of a static electric field. We use them to keep the 12 volt power from dipping during peak current draws. The amount of current that can be supplied for a period of time depends on the amount of capacitance and the change in voltage...

The formula is I = C dv/dt (Amps = Capacitance * Volts per Second)

In terms that matter to car audio: 1 Farad will supply 100 amps for 100 milliseconds while losing 1 volt. Rule of thumb is 1 farad per 1000 watts works well.

5. Just got a test about capacitors and everything about circuits on wednesday
As a matter of physics, the capacitance of a capacitor is measured in farads but you usually use when building circuits units like millifarads, nanofarads, etc.
Capacitance= charge/volts
C=Q/V
you also define a farad as 1 coulomb/volt
The use of capaciotrs in every circuit are many, almost every circuit found in anything even a regrigerator or a camera has capacitors in it.
For matters of car audio you will need them to feed your system during small periods of high wattage demands.
For every 1000 watt you will need 1 farad
