96 Chevy Silverado - System Advice?

Hey Everyone! I'm new here to CA.com - found the site while searching for suggestions on components to replace the stock stereo in my 96 Silverado Extended Cab Pickup. I have an idea of a system & components to use and would like to hear what you knowledgeable folks thought of it. As to music, I listen to mostly Classic Rock from the 70's to current - my lady loves the 80's so there we are.

My truck has the odd-sized stock head unit with separate stock CD below. Front doors have the separate tweeter located in front of the power window/door controls and 6"? midrange speakers in the door kick panels - Rear pillars have 4x6's but I wasn't figuring on using anything there in the new system.

I'd like to stay with a stock/stealth look all around and would like to keep cost at or under $1000 so was considering the following.

    Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P77DH

    Front Speakers - Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 6 1/2"

    Amplifier - Pioneer GM-6100F 150w x2 @ 4 ohms

    Amplified Subwoofer - Kenwood KSC-SW1

So what do you guys/gals think? I've read good reviews on the above components except couldn't find any on the Pioneer amp. Any constructive criticism is welcomed!

i think for now i would do a bomb *** set of components and a good amp with an EQ on them. then later i would expand my system to a good bass setup when you can afford more.

Thanks for the replys but the only ones I'm trying to impress are myself and my lady - not the neighbors as I drive by. I'm just trying to build a decent budget system that sounds great and will last at mid-level volume levels - I'm not trying to win a competition here. I just want to know if there's anything wrong with my ideas as to components or brands.

imaging is part of sounding good if you want the norm be the norm . noone says you need a loud system and even if it were loud it depends on how you listen to it . when you listen to home speakers do you set them up like factory locations in a truck? no i would hope not anyway

the only way you are going to annoy your neighbors is if you want too. you have control over it. i think you will be happier with a great set of components with a nice EQ and amp over a mediocre setup of mediocre products.

Yeah man, you are on the right track. The components in the stock locations up front work pretty well. A few weeks ago I did some shopping around pricing a system for a freinds kid. Anyway, I had components in the doors, replaced the 4x6's, put a ten under the back seat in a prefab box, a six channel amp to run it all, a six channel wiring kit, and a 4 channel line output converter running off the stock head unit. It came to about 900 bucks. This was using good quality stuff. No junk whatsoever. All from authorized internet dealers for warranty purposes. Oh, yeah, it was for a 99 ext. cab chevy. Thats the kind of system I would suggest for you. nothing outrageous but still capable of getting a little loud and sound good doing it.

    Thanks Bake

It's good to see that somebody understands where I'm trying to go with this system - not all of us have money flyin' out of our A$$'es.

it isnt so much the equipment as it is the install. speaker locations and installation as well as tweakability blows away an average set up doesnt have to be loud at all doesnt need 200 bijibawatts just should be well thought out

If you want some help putting together a shopping list let me know. I don't know what the prices you had on the stuff you listed but if it was $1000 you can do much better.

Nobody's heard them. They aren't in production yet. There is no prototype even available. But he should still consider them. They will rock. I promise.
PS: The new Squeaksters will be a midwoofer addition to my subwoofer line, the Squeakinators

Re: 96 Chevy Silverado - System Advice?

Spend the money on components, a HU, and an amp. If you get some components with larger drivers say a 7 or 8" you probably won't even care about the sub--for a while anyway.

Re: 96 Chevy Silverado - System Advice?

The advice you guys are giving on using better stuff makes sense - have tweaked my budget and here is my new wish list.

    Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P77DH

Front Speakers - Boston Acoustics SL60 6-1/2" Component System

    Front Amplifier - Hifonics Zeus ZX4000 - 100 Watts x 2 chan. @ 4 Ohms

    Rear Sub Enclosure & Driver - Q Logic QL-C1GMX110D + Kicker 10" CompVR CVR104

    Sub Amplifier - either the Hifonics Titan TX1005D - 350 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms or Hifionics Titan TX1505D - 500 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 ohms

Am still looking at using the Pioneer DEH-P77DH as my HU - it has 3 sets of 4v preouts (Front, Rear, Sub/Non-Fading), a High-Pass Crossover (50/80/125Hz, -12dB/Oct.) and Low-Pass Subwoofer Crossover (50/80/125Hz, -18dB/Oct., +/-12dB), and a 3 band Parametric EQ. I know it's not an Alpine or some other big name with lots of bells & whistles but I dont want to worry about the motorized face taking a $hit on me, etc.

So, looking any better as a decent selection of budget components?
