Re: how do i know how big of a box?

YOu have to find the requirements of the sub you want to use.

Then you decide if you want sealed (smaller box), or ported (larger, usually louder)

Then you go from there, designing the Lenth, Width, and Height you want/can fit in your car. When you find that out, you multiply the LxWxH (without the thickness of the wood) and divide by 1728 (inches in a sqfoot)...

I think there might be a beginners guide for box building somewhere on this site...

Re: how do i know how big of a box?

yea thx for the quick response...ive been reading it. still debating how i want it. i was reading that sealed boxes have better sound quality? im looking to get sound quality with with this box as well as trying to use as little space...if i were to have a jl12v3 what size would the box be? and how would i figure that out on my own.

    Sealed Enclosure Range: 1.00-1.50 cu.ft. (28.3-42.0 liters)

that's what it says on the site? how would i figure that out in box size? if i were to build one? how could i measure that?

Re: how do i know how big of a box?

Well, a 1 cubic foot would be 12x12x12 (inner dimentions of the box) so outside it would be 13.5x13.5x13.5.

But then you have to find the displacement of the sub (how much space the sub takes up inside of the box) beacuse thats lost airspace. I would think the JL would be around .06?

So the box would be a little bigger, what kind of vehical do you have?

Ported boxes can have good sound quailty too! Check out this thread...

Re: how do i know how big of a box?

yea i was thinking about a ported box as well. i have an 05 EVO. dont really want to upgrade the sub..maybe later..but for now this sub will do. where would i find the displacement? im looking on the site and can't find it. and im not sure im ready to build a ported box..maybe once i make a couple enclosed ill try for the ported..

and as for the 13.5x13.5x13.5 would that be for a flat suface? how i would i measure that if i make it flush against the wall?

If your looking for the best box, I know several guys on here design box layout plans for about $5 sealed and $8 ported and they get the exact measurements for your specific speaker.
