Fiberglass Box Project - Plexiglass and 2 Tv's **PICS**

This is the start of the thread of my project I am building for my 2dr 2000 Blazer. It will house 3 12 w6v2's which will all be facing directly in the car with all 3 in a line right above the backseats. It will be flush from the roof to both side windows. There will be a storage box to go underneath the sub box which will house the amps, battery, xbox and all wires. When the tailgate glass is open the back of the box will be all fiberglassed perfectly (well hopefully ) with the side pillars and roof. Hopefully the pictures will explain clearer. BTW this is my first ever fiberglass box and 2nd ever box, so go easy on me.

Oh by the way, half way through the project I had a little run in with the table saw so half of the project was built with one hand. I got a little help with the glass from a friend.

Shot of hand.. the cut wraps around about an inch in on my palm which cant really be seen with this pic.

and another... This is the 2 days after and 14 stiches later. The cut went barely to the bone, luckily only scrapping of the tiniest bit of bone. It did cut cleanly through the superficial nerves leaving no feeling in my pinky forever which *****. Also got a minor tendon.

Pic of sub box. Thats the frame for the plexi in the middle and the frame for the two 5in screens on the sides. All mdf is 1" Extra dense and the plexi is 3/4".

    another..

and another.. This is a closeup of the TV frame. compare this to what I ended up have to do after the enclosure would fit in the car. I had to readjust the mounts for the tv frames AFTER it was already wrapped. That is why the mount looks good in the pic and terrible in the one later.

This where the subs will be mounted.. This will be flush with the ceiling and from side window to side window. This is the front of the box and will be seen right above the line of the back seats, as looking from the front of the car.

last one.. pic of plexglass frame. This will be the view as viewed from the back.

Re: Fiberglass Box Project - Plexiglass and 2 Tv's **PICS**

Nice dry pic of it wrapped.. That is the plexi in the middle with the brown protective paper on it and the green tape so that the resin doesnt get on it. Obviously the tape and paper will be off and some sort of cover plate all decorated nice and neat will be on.

I had to more the frames for the tv's a little in order for it to fit, will see in a later pic.

After the first layer of resin, did quite make it thick enough and didnt soak enough on some parts, will have to do another layer tomorow.

another.. Sorry for the ****** pics but it got dark as I was done, which also didnt help with the drying of the resin.

This is a terrible shot of the tv frame, just injustice to how **** it looks in real life. I know the fleece job wasnt the greatest around the tv frames, especially where it meets the plexi frame, but hey its my first time.

You can see the original stick holding up the frame for the tv, I had to take it off the original post, which was very sturdy, and had to make an impromptu one after it was already wrapped, which really ******. Luckily I test fitted it before I laid the resin or else the whole thing wouldnt have fit. Thats why it looks so bad but trust me it really isnt as bad as it looks.

    another...

    Too much hardener!!! OOPS!!

will put another layer on the outside and will start laying some mat on the inside tomorow. will post more pics.

Feel free to put in any input, comments, critisicm, remarks, etc. I can use all the advice and tips I can get.

Instead of wasting alot of time to lay mat on the inside, look for some fiberglass filler. probally at your local boaters supply place. Made by West Systems, it is Collidial Silica(?) #406 I beleive.

You mix it into the resin real good, let it soak and then add the hardener. It will be best at a peanut butter consistancy and then spread it on the inside. Will really speed up your work, makes it about 1/2" thick in one pass. Time saved.

Thanks I will try it. How much does it cost?? Just put it strait on the inside of the fleece or also lay mat with it?

Also what is the "milky" substance that people on this forum are referring too???

Re: Fiberglass Box Project - Plexiglass and 2 Tv's **PICS**

No need to mix mat into it. Just spread it onto the backside of the fleece or whatever you used.

Go to http://www.westsystem.com/ and then to Product Info and then to Fillers. It is the #406 I use.
