    My fiberglass box progress

Yea i decided to take pics of my box while i was building it so i could see how the rest of you guys like it. Its going to hold a 15" RE XXX. I was going to just take the easy route and build a wooden box, but to take advantage of the space in my trunk, and to be able to get the box big enough, i decided to go with fiberglassing. At first i fiberglassed the entire bottom of the trunk and along the back, but afterwards i decided to just cut out a piece of wood to put along the bottom and also along the back, it saved me a lot of time and a lot of fiberglass. Its also going to look a lot nicer fiberglassed than just a wooden box. I think it will be worth the extra work and money.

I had to tape off almost my entire trunk cuz this box is gonna be pretty big.

I taped foil on top of the tape to make sure the resin didnt seep through the first layer of tape and get stuck to the bottom of my car =D it also peeled off the dried fiberglass a lot easier than the tape did, so it saved me a lot of time.

I didnt take pictures of the fiberglass in the trunk or after i took it out and reinforced it, but thats no big deal anyways. This picture shows the box with the port glued in as well as the sub ring. This is also after i finished trimming the extra iberglass off around the edges.

im going out today to buy the cloth so i can finish up the box, ill post more pics when i get them. Let me know how it looks so far!

    Re: My fiberglass box progress

well i kinda measured the average width, and the height is pretty much the same all around, so i got some dimensions like that. Plus the ring is going to make the box taller and give it more air space. so i just got that volume, and tuned accordingly. if the air space is off it wont affect the tuning too much, im hoping the box comes out bigger than expected so it will be tuned a little lower.

And when its all done im most likely going to paint it a glossy white to match my car.

i just got back from the fabric store, so ill get to work stretching the cloth over the box. Ill get pics when i can.

    Re: My fiberglass box progress

when you start glassing on the fabric, i'd suggest you soak the fabric in resin first, let it dry, then fiberglass on that. sometimes when you glass right on the fabric, and push in with your prush, air gets between the glass and fabric. maybe you already knew this, but just thought i'd offer some advice.

    Re: My fiberglass box progress

i guess you guys missed my project where i did this

lookin good man. very nice tape job, that kind of stuff makes it go so much faster. the aluminum does help, and so does the MDF floor and back wall.very clean... but where are the amps going to go

should have made two amp mounts on the sides

    iamamp3pimp:

well i did about 2 layers on the bottom and then i glued the wood on to that to save time.

    Rawr-DQ:
wow, how much does that cost on average? I might try that.
lets see, a sheet of mdf is $20, a 2 gallon can of resin is around $20 also, plus the fiberglass matt, and paintbrushes, gloves, cloth, sp i would say $60-$80 depending on how big the box is and everything. i mean this could be completely different for you.

    req:
but where are the amps going to go
thats a good question i was planning of crafting some sort of amp rack that will go in between the back of my trunk and the box. ill figure out somewhere to put it in the meantime.

I should be starting to apply the resin tomorrow, i have nothing else to do and i got spring break next week, so i should have this done in no time.

    Re: My fiberglass box progress

post some pics! if you still can, use cloth instead of matte. you will have to do a couple more layers, but its worth it.
