But on subs in most cases(quality built subs) that rating is there only to protect the sub. Not really saying thats all they will take. Even if a sub says 2000watts max doesnt mean much. A sub can "say" 2000watts and only have a 1.5inch voice coil, a sub with that coil wont get close to taking 2000 watts, you would be lucky to get 600 through it with out blowing.

Most of the time you can tell what the subs all about just from the Voice coil size. A 2.5inch coil i wouldnt go over 2k watts on maybe not even 1500watts honestly but people do it anyway.
