Icon11 sundown sa8 single cab box ideas?

Any one with good ideas on a ported box for behind the seat in a 2000 chevy single cab with the bucket seats, not wanting to do a center console box... My sa8 should be here soon thanks to splaudio..

You are not really giving much info. Workable dimensions usually help.

Also it is early afternoon. Not many active users right now. Give it a few hours so more traffic can see the thread.

Re: sundown sa8 single cab box ideas?

well the box i had my 12 in was about as big as i was confortable with, but any way i am going to be running one sa8 d2 ported thinking around 33hz unless there is a better idea, and the box can be 16''h up to 55'' wide, top d 6'', bottom d 9,1/2... Also will be using a aero/pvc port.. Im really wanting to find a way to fire the sub at the driver wall and fire the port at the passenger wall to avoid having the sub getting damaged from hitting the back of the seat...

Hey! . You just have to be careful with that type of alignment. WIth 55" width and the sub and port facing 180 degree from each other, you need more than simple ported calculations to make sure it will sound right. Its possible, but with a few different ideas that may give a not so good looking response curve to actually sound better. hard to explain in words right now, but I would recommend not doing that for a simple aero-ported reflex design. I would have the sub flushed into the box or down fire it with the port towards the passenger side for the best loading, that way only a 90degree phase shift is required for smoother response output. You also have to calculate for the distance difference between the driver and the port to the driver headrest as, again, 55" width is a lot to account for for such a small effective surface diameter. It will not average the width as far as directive localization of the response output due to the non-symmetrical distances of the port and sub to your headrest.

A lot can be considered in that type of design to make it work right. But, yea, the sub down and port to the right (facing forward), passenger side, would likely work the best with the limited dimensions you have.

Yeah, I have a sundown sa-8 in the same kind of truck. I recommend sub forward and port to the side. I have my sub behind the passenger seat and port towards drivers side b-pillar, but you could do it opposite. I actually have a longer piece of wood on top the box which assures that the subwoofer will not touch the seat (not shown in the video I am about to link), but you have various methods to stop this. You can see my box in this video: Sundown SA-8 in Regular Cab - YouTube

Re: sundown sa8 single cab box ideas?

i thought of that too, but i would like to be able to use both seats at comfort, i know that i could just keep the seat a couple inches form the sub but thats alot of room in a small cab, being just a single sa8 it wont have to be near 55in, i think i can build just a rectangular box like, 20''wide, 12''high, 10''top d, 10'' bottom d, and have and have the sub to driver wall, but where would be the best place to fire the port, or would this not be a good setup?

Thanks for the helpful responses, i think im going to do my box similar to travicles, but still need to know what ft3 it would do best in ported, and also if anyone knows how much space to account for when dropping the sub in?

That box is only 6.5" deep which is really nice, because it lets the seats go all the way back pretty much. I am unsure of your sa-8 model though. This is the v1, which is much shallower than the v2. Either way, .6 cubic feet would be great. If you have under 500 watts, you could go a little bit bigger. Make sure you have enough port area; my port takes up a third of the box..maybe more. Oh and I think sub displacement is around .1 cubic feet.

Re: sundown sa8 single cab box ideas?

The box in the video is 34.5" x 13" x 6.5" and it is .56 cubic feet. I want to say the port is 2.5" x 5" and I think over 40 inches long. If you do use an aero or pvc port, it is recommended to use a 4" which makes for a very long port. I have actually built a box for it like this but it was around .9 cubic feet, and quite a bit of the port was on the outside of the box. I really don't think you're supposed to use a 3" port, but you should email sundown if you want to confirm this.

Thanks, im wanting to shoot for .75 if not a tad more, but did you have to add a baffle to make the sub fit or was it plenty deep at 6.5?

The sub fits at that depth, but it is close. I don't know if there are any bad repercussions from doing this. It wouldn't hurt to deepen the box a tad bit if you are worried, or you could ask someone else for their opinion. Actually, if I could do it all over again, I would do a little deeper.. maybe 6.75". And I don't know what kind of power you have, but don't build that box too big if you have too much.
