mounting cutout size?

ok guys im extrmely baffled here i had a guy make me another sub box and he put as a cutout size for a 12" sub as 11". now here is what doesnt seem to make any sense how can the cutout be smaller than the cone? The entire height of the box is 13.5 inches and the sub is at least 15 3/8 wide

An 11" cutout for a 12" sub is perfectly normal. But it sounds like in your last sentence that you're describing a 15" sub. Easiest thing to do is look up the woofer in question and find out the correct mounting hole size.

yes it is a serious question!!! and i understand it might fall through. I was told it was a 15" sub but when i measured the cone it was just 12" but the entire outside diameter is 15 3/8" thats what doesnt make sense

The 12" you are referring to might just be the effective diameter information. I am working on a design right now of a 12 that has an effective diameter of exactly 10", and I had to ask the guy if 10" was the exact diameter. He verified it was. So, it might be a 15 with a 12" Sd. Possibly? Some drivers are complex also, where the bottom part of the frame loops in a little which covers part of the cone. So, this is possible it is a 15". Any pics of it? Details? Etc? That will help us determine it exactly? What driver?

these are really only the pics I have. I don't have pics of just the driver. The diameter of just the cone is 12" but the entire outside diameter of the entire sub from edge to edge is 15 3/8

i do believe that box is 32 inches wide or a little less

Simply put, the drivers overall diameter, which is the official diameter, is measured by the outer dimensions, not the inner ones. So,if you said it was 15 3/8 I believe it was, then its a 15. The cone diameter will depend on the mechanical contruction for excursion control and such. Just a heads up. you could have a 15 with an 8inch cone and it would be considered a 15 still.....just with one hell of a surround,lol.

I'm so confused....u don't measure the diameter of he cun it hast b from the very edge of the sub to the oher.....



U have to make more sense op......is the sub a 12 or a 15.....u talk about an 11" cutout ad the sub being a 12...but then say its 15" wide

the sub is a 15" inch i said 12" becuase i thought it was measured as effective area of the cone not of the entire sub from edge to edge thats why i said 12" but now I know for sure it is a 15" just with a 12" cone
