Yeah, it works a little bit. However it seems to be more for sealed boxes.

Actually, bobb is somewhat correct. It gives more of a cushioning effect to the air which tricks the sub into working like its in a bigger box. Since the air can compress more than in a non-stuffed box, it allows the sub to move more by not having as much compression in the same given space.
