Yeah, it works a little bit. However it seems to be more for sealed boxes.

I believe the correct ratio is about a pound per cubic foot. What it does is fool the air into thinking the box is bigger, because the polyfill slows the air down so it takes longer to resonate I guess.

Actually, bobb is somewhat correct. It gives more of a cushioning effect to the air which tricks the sub into working like its in a bigger box. Since the air can compress more than in a non-stuffed box, it allows the sub to move more by not having as much compression in the same given space.
