New here: need help with vented enclosure

Hi all,

Living in a state where car audio is almost unheard of, I ventured out in the net to find parts for my Jetta Wagon.

So far, Ive replaced the factory equipment with Focal V2 in the front and rear, powered by a JL Audio 300/4. It sounds very clear ad crisp, but I want some bass now.

After reading a few threads, I noticed a lot of people liked the Resonant Engineering XXX subwoofers. I searched various things on the net about the XXX subwoofers and have come to the conclusion, thats the subwoofer I want.

Ive never built a box before. And I need help. Ive tried to use WINisd but I dont understand it.

Is anyone willing to draw up a vented enclosure sufficient for this subwoofer? Im planning to get a 15".

What kind of music do you listen to? Do you know what frquency you want the box tuned to? I'll be happy to design on for you. Is it one or two subs? Thickness of MDF you want? Let me know.

I listen to everything. So Id like it to be versatile.

I was thinking 35Hz (per Resonant's specs). It will be a single 15" and after reading some about boxes, 3/4" around, with a double layer on the face.

ok, do you want one or two vents, and which side of the box ist the sub mounted to. The 40" side or the 16" side. It'll be a tight fit on the 16" side, but it will fit. Im thinking it'll be better on the 40" side with two vents, one on each side of the same 40" side that the woofer is on.

I would recomend tuning a bit lower than that, try atleast under 32, more like 28 or so, especially because you are listening to all types of music. Also, im not sure that the 1100 watts that amp puts out will really fully satisfy the xxx. You probably want around 1500 or so going to it.

Yes, the woofer will be on the 40" side.

As for tuning and ports, Resonant recommends 35Hz and 1 port. If it doesnt make a difference, then whatever works best.

Im running 1/0 awg in the car, so I will be adding another 1000/1 down the road.

Ok, check this out. This is tuned to a perfect 28.3Hz, but I had to make the box 38.25" long instead of 40". It works best that way. The box is 16x16x38.25, and has a double layered front. All 3/4" MDF. I'll have a rendition of the front up in a minute.

here is the exact gain output chart for this box. The -3db is at 32.5Hz. The box ends up bieng 2.731ft^3. This sub needs a lot of box volume to play low. If you can make the box bigger, if it will fit, it can play lower notes.

I may have to re-measure my trunk. There isnt a big enough gain to even consider vented.

Sorry, I mustve been calculating in a hurry. I was slightly off. I made slight redesigns to the box. It is now 40x16x16, and the ports are 3" instead of 2". The volume of he box is 3.56ft^3, and is now tuned to 30.85Hz. I understand you were considering sealed because of the gain? Well, here is a gain chart. It speaks for itself. The darker line is the gainin a sealed box, the lighter line is the vented box.
