smooth all edges of the box, make sure there are no seams. if there are seams, sand them or fill them with wood/body filler. a simple glaze will do which is cheaper and in a smaller container.
then hit the box with a high build primer. you would need a compressor and paint gun for this which can both be had on a budget at Harbor Freight. after about 4-5 good coats of primer, you would wetsand the primer to a smooth finish.
time to get the paint code for your car color which can be found on the driver door jamb sticker. then take that to a local paint shop and get a perfect match. then lay down another 3-4 coats of that color and then shoot a clear over it. you will want 4-6 layers of clear so that you can wetsand and buff that to a high sheen.
