The larger the box, the more efficient the sub becomes. Which means it doesn't take as much power to get the thing moving.

yes sorta, i mean u don't need 20 cubic feet. like if the rec. is 3 ft then u can go up to like 6 or 7. just depends mostly but yes the bigger the box the louder it will be to a certain point.
too big of a box might hurt ur sub. only extremely big.
