    RE SE('s) Box

Well...I'm planning out a sub box for a friend who is either getting one or a pair of 12" SE's.

I'm turning to you guys for some suggestions

This is the trunk of a Cavalier...so an "alright" amount of airspace - however we still need some trunk space to pack a hockey bag or a pair of golf bags around. I havent measured in a 95 - 00 Cavalier trunk yet...so I cant give you guys any "for sure" measurements. If anyone has any, please post them up.

For a pair of SE12's, I was looking at the following 3 boxes. I have allowed 3" of port width. I think there is enough length and height to decrease port noise and give a proper tuning. Assume 3/4" thickness. All measurements in inches. Final airspace numbers do NOT include driver displacement nor port displacement.

    1.
    31.25"L x 16"D x 16"H = 4.629ft^3 (external)
    29.75"L x 14.5"D x 14.5"H = 3.619ft^3 (internal)

    2.
    33.25"L x 17"D x 16"H = 5.233ft^3 (external)
    31.75"L x 15.5"D x 14.5"H = 4.129ft^3 (internal)

    3.
    30.75"L x 18"D x 16"H = 5.125ft^3 (external)
    29.25"L x 16.5"D x 14.5"H = 4.049ft^3 (internal)

I've allowed 3" (internal) width for a port so far. I can probably add airspace and port area by bringing the height up - but I do not know how high I can go in a Cavalier.

If someone wants to design a port that's tuned to 35hz that is 3" wide and 14.5" tall go right ahead, I just need the length.

I think that 2.25ft^3 would be ideal for a 12SE. Any other input is welcome.

I take it this is not for spl? You could always do a swappable port. The car seems to like 49 hz.

But either way, I think 4 cubes net for the two drivers would be awesome.

It's just for daily driving...all he wants is loud

I'll probably just stick with tuning it to 35hz I guess, unless anyone else thinks that I should go a bit higher or a bit lower to achieve great SPL, while still being able to play on a daily basis.

When I get some measurements, I will be able to let you know for sure if I can go bigger or not.

The 4.2 cu ft - 15.84 ....is 15.84 the port length? And .398 is the volume the port, or the piece of wood would take up? Im guessing the port...

The 4.2 one is looking the best right now...do you agree?

It's hard for me to design boxes that arent in the back of an SUV and smaller than 8 cubes

yeh, 4.2 sounds good.. the decimal number is the port length.. and the .398 number is the cu ft the port takes up (displacement).

    I think this one works...

    33.25"L x 17"D x 17"H = 5.560ft^3 (external)
    31.75"L x 15.5"D x 15.5"H = 4.414ft^3 (internal)

    Port displacement: 4.414ft^3 - .398ft^3 = 4.016ft^3

    Driver displacement (dont know actual #): 4.016ft^3 - .2ft^3 = 3.816ft^3

Just gotta find out if that box would fit.

Now that I think we have the box pretty much organized...time to get some idea's on how to do the install. Since he wants to have some space...I was thinking of folding the seats down and placing a piece of MDF in there and mounting the amp there...kind of like this:

Then have the subs firing into the trunk...something like John's:

The possibilites are endless and opinions are welcome.

Trying to make this a forum oriented project,

Going to be switching to 10's...

It's truly amazing how everyone jumps into helping design others stereo's, but mine. At least thats how it seems.
