i wouldnt recommend using .5" when building a box for a higher power system ie. spl comp level and the like
however .5" is alright for lower wattage setups although you may want to consider bracing any largeer sides of your box just to make sure it doesnt flex.

it is for a xxx, i only have about 17" of clearance in my trunk so i don't think 3/4mdf will work too well with a 15"er, is there a way to "sand" down the 3/4where there is a trouble spot?

This would be a good idea...but the XXX's are so deep that the magnet may end up hitting the bottom of the box, if you follow...

if space is an issue....1/2" covered in fiberglass would probably do it....per thickness, fiberglass is much much stronger.

Why not face the sub up towards the trunk lid? But if you wanted to face it backwards then you could dido or daydo the top and bottom.
