Wood?

Is MDF the only wood recommended or are their other woods that would work just as good?

3/4" or larger MDF is standard box building material.

I've tried hard woods (Cherry, maple, birch, mahogany, etc) and it worked just as well - the overall thickness I used was about 1". More expensive, but worth it if you're going for that natural wood look.

There are others that work as good (or better), but you usually pay more. Marine grade plywood I've found to be among the best. But at 2-3x the cost of MDF, it aint that great

u can use particle board but it chips very easy

Maybe I should cut back to just giving my 2 cents. Good luck finding some MDF. Around here the only 2 places that carry it are Home Depot and Menards. And both of em have it on back order or something.

If sealed with fiberglass resin, it aint so bad. But as someone else mentioned, the chips will peel off. I prefer MDF. It is almost identical in price at the HD here.
