Spackle instead of bondo on top of fiberglass???

    Hey,

I am currently fabbing a center console for my truck and am almost done glassing it. My uncle told me that instead of using bondo to smooth it out I could use vinyl spackle/ spackling gum, the kind that you put on a wall to smooth out dents and holes. He said he uses them on his RC airplanes and they go over 140mph in the air and has never had a problem with the stuff breaking/cracking after prime/paint/clear. Would that stuff work??? because it would be a WHOLE lot easier to use and much less of a hassle. Anybody worked with it before on a glassed enclosure?

I dunno... but getting a rough shape, then spackle/plaster, then another smooth coat of fiberglass would probably work out not too bad and save some sanding elbow grease.

I wouldn't , most plasters / fillers are brittle when dry . Ever get bored , and notice how easily a fingernail can cut into plaster ?

I don't think he's talking about plaster... unless vinyl spackle/spackling gum is plaster, I could be wrong.

Like I said tho, a layer of fine weave glas over top of any wall plaster might actually be pretty tough.

I don't see how , all the spackle I have seen dries brittle . So brittle in fact , when it breaks it crushes rather easily into a powder . You could use rebar to reinforce it and it still won't be strong enough for anything that's gonna take any kind of abuse. Filler isn't that expensive in the first place . Why put all your hard work into something then half arse the surfacing prep ? Seems like a waste to me.

Is rage gold better than good old bondo?

just mix some resin & harder in with it to give it a little extra strength.

yes way better. It is not made out of clay like bondo, it applies easier, sands easier and doesnt leave the pits that bondo does.

houses don't generally vibrate and are not subject to the environmental extremeties that a vehicle and its contents are... use an automobile body filler only for these applications. Otherwise it is a huge waste of your time and money.
