So I'm about to start my fiberglass project...

...but I have a few questions.

Im planning on building a fiberglass enclosure to take the place of a leather cushion covering a ski hole in the back seat of my car. Here is a picture of the area

The fiberglass enclosure will be the same shape and size of the cushion so it will be flush with the back seats.

Should I buy a gallon of the fiberglass resin (only place I found it was autozone for $31) or the quart size (only $11)?

    Im planning on buying...

    fiberglass resin
fiberglass mat (cant find cloth locally?)
    respirator
    sandpaper
    cheap brushes
    tape
    fleece
    mdf for rings
    what else?

I tried putting the layers of masking tape in tonight but it would not stick at all. What could I use that would stick to the plastic?

Any ideas on making a mold to match the cushion?

Re: So I'm about to start my fiberglass project...

yes. a gallon. any less and you might be stuck half way through

and if you need 3 quarts, you will end up paying more anyway

the way i would do it, is get some cleaning crap [ not oily ] somthing like windex or rubbing alcohol and clean the crap out of that container, then lay a good amount of masking tape in there [ cover it ALL up ] and tape off the entire "back area" that the enclosure will be moulded to. tape off your seats and all your upholstry should be covered in spare cloth\plastic - you dont want epoxy on it

then go ahead and put a thin layer of cooking spray on the tape where the mould will be [ parafin wax works well too ] to release the mould from the tape when you are done [ parafin will prolly work best, but it will be hard to apply to such a small area ]

then apply a thin layer of epoxy over that, and buy FIBERGLASS MATT - and rip small chunks off and STICK them as flat as you can to the epoxy and then apply more epoxy over them, its going to be hard to do in such a small area, so do not mix your epoxy too rich [ read directions and mix accordingly ]

make sure to 'build out' further than what you end up planning on using as the final mould, and make a 'baffle' for the speaker to mount to, mount this to your rear mould with some hot-glue and sretch some LYCRA or thin stretchy material over the speaker mount and around to the back of the mould - and use little dabs of hot-glue to hold it in place. cover it all in resin, and while its still wet - rip small chunks of fiberglass off and do the same thing you did with your rear mould

i wish i was there to help ya man - looks like alot of fun.

what are ya planning on stashing in there?

i think you can fit an RLi10\IDQ10 in there to be quite honest, if you do sotmhing like this that is -

should be able to get like 1\2 a cube in there easy if you want to cover the middle hump like you said. then you cover the whole thing in white vynl [leather if you got the $], it would look awesome!

can you tuck that 'flap' thats in between the seatbelts there up and underneath the seat that its on [ and leave it there ]? that would make your life alot eaiser

Thats awesome, but I already have an eD eu-700 6.5 inch sub to fit in the small hole.

The loose flap has already been tucked away inside the seats. Cant wait to get started.

Can I use duct tape to line the plastic inside? Will duct tape come back out it I put it in?

Here is what it looks like with the cushion in place.... just imagine the cushion being fiberglass and an eu-700 in the middle

i wouldnt suggest duct tape, but it will work. go otu and get some painters tape [blue or green kind] or some masking tape [ light brown ] its MUCH eaiser to work with man.

and trust, you would be so much happier with a 10 or a 12 over that center hump man

    http://www.soundsplinter.com/rli_ser...formation.html

those are the two speakers i would look into, but if you are set on the little eu700, go for it

Im just looking to add a little bass to the car. Stock the car doesnt even have any subs, just 2 3.5"s and 2 1.1" tweets.

Re: So I'm about to start my fiberglass project...

well, you wont really get ALOT of bass with a single 6.5 to be honest. you will hear a little, but they only give out so much with such a little cone area...

if i were you i would be looking to get some 6.5" components up front before i worried about bass

but i am 100% posative you will be much happier with the 10 or 12 covering that hump between the seats, and that RLi10 only needs .2ish cubes man, you have PLENTY of room. my freakin DOOR POD for my midbass in my car is like .15 cubes

Have you tried cleaning all of the dust off of that black plastic box? The tape might stick then...

lol, read my post - i told him to do that alraedy

he was just saying he HAD duct tape, and i told him to steer clear if he could avoid using it. it sticks WAY too much to everything to be useful in this application - because you need to REMOVE it when you are done lol.
