1st two layers of FG very uneven -- need advice

hi everyone. my first post here. heh

im in need of some good advice from you all. i layed the first and second layers of glass over my enclosure, but i did a terrible job i think. i have strands of fg sticking up all over the place, and theyve basically hardened with resin. now i can't lay any additional glass on top of the first two because any additional layers wont sit flat because those strands are preventing it. im kind of bummed out as the project was looking really good up until now.

what should i do? i was thinking i could just use a palm sander to even the surface and rid those strands of fg that are sticking up. good idea? or no?

here's what my project looks like by the way.. before the glassing that is...

    help please!

    Wait..
there isn't any resin applied in the second picture is there? I sugguest taking a paintbrush and making sure that you get a nice even saturation of the material. After you resin your cloth, then do a couple layers of fiberglass mat, as you need some strength being it is a subwoofer enclosure.

He stated that is BEFORE he glassed it.

    Now he has uneven glass...

I can not help this, as I have never worked with fiber glass, just trying to clarify the situation

Yeah you did a great job stretching it over your frame. Nice job on the frame too, should turn out great depending on how the resin and mat works out for you. Could you post a picture of the problem you are seeking help with?

Yeah that could be a good idea to get back to a flat even surface.. post a picture though for best advice.

Re: 1st two layers of FG very uneven -- need advice

^ thanks for the ups on the fleecing

also.. nope.. no resin applied in that light blue pic. i soaked the fleece with resin with no problems like shrinking or wrinkling. it came out really good. my problem now are the strands that are making the surface very uneven. i sort of got the hang of laying down the glass after i had arready screwed up one side.. hehe... but now im left with one good flat even side suitable for more fg layers and the other side being terrible with strands poking up all over the place! haha. im thinking the palm sander idea will work... any thoughts? it seems like a logical solution...
btw.. thanks for the replies so far.

ok, did you resin the fleece, or did you lay fiberglass over the fleece?

edit, n/m he posted right before I posted

Re: 1st two layers of FG very uneven -- need advice

you got alot of good advice here so far. Basically you can keep going ahead wih what you are doing, adding more layers. You can sand that with an orbital sander and die grinder to get the most of the high spots down, then you can smooth it all out by mixing some body filler and resin together. pour it all over the enclosure. Making sure that it is also propped off of the work table so that it doesnt end up sticking. The "body shake" allows you to get a smooth surface by filling in the low parts. It basically adds another reinforcing layer that you can pour on. YOu will have to sand that smooth, and add some bondo here and there. All depending on how you plan on finishing it. If you paint it, it needs to be flawless. If you are going to atempt to stretch carpet it needs to be just fairly smooth with no noticeable divets. Keep going you are on the right track. ( I hope you got really good saturation between the fleece and the rings.) Get us some more pics soon.

Cut the strands that are sticking up, sand in between layers.
