they usually take the stocks and build them up. best advice is find an alternator shop and give them a call to see what they can do for you. may be cheaper to ebay one. and if you do ebay, there's a seller named powermax. the alternators are true to their amperage rating. i have one now on my 2000 jeep Cherokee, rated @ 250 amps. and im sure it puts it out. and the pricing is reasonable as i paid 250 w/free shipping and i see people paying upwards of 400$ for one from other companies.

The problem with rebuilt stock alternators is that usually they still do very poor at idle. You may get 200amps or more at a higher rpm, but they suffer at idle. Thats just what I gather from my research on alt. If you do ask around about getting your stock rebuilt, ask about the idle output, not just the maximum output.

well i believe that most HO alternators are that way. and most HO's are from stocks then rewound.

but really mine is crappy @ low rpms also. but above 1000rpms it works pretty well. a smaller pulley on the alt, will improve this though

So you have had good experience from the powermax stuff? I was thinking of doing it, but was skeptical since they are so cheap...

Most of the higher end alt companies build their alts to have higher than normal output at idle

having your stock rebuilt is generally a bad idea. the stock was not designed to produce high amounts of current, and as a result it's lifetime is drastically cut. you're better off saving up the extra $$ and just getting an HO alt. it will put out more than the rewound alt, last longer, and just have an over all better amount of quality to it

these are the best and yes there is a difference in alternators and quality. I would only buy from these guys

You forgot excessive amperage. Nathan is a stand up guy, and builds some mean alternators.
