I'm just looking for a basic alarm to protect my equipment. I know enough about car electronics so i will install it myself.

I'd want something with a 2 way pager, but that's just me.
That will work fine but I agree I would want something with a 2 way pager.
x3.
Two-way pager would be better, but for a basic system, that one will work great.

The Viper350HV is upgradeable to a 2-way...just need an antenna and remote (my friend has one with the 2-way). I would add a shock sensor to it. Sometimes the ones built into the brain do not work as good as an external one.

Hell i think i pick one of these up from him before i buy it new
i've got the python 460hp on my jimmy which is essentially the same alarm. it works well. if you're looking for a decent alarm without spending an arm and a leg, dei (viper, python, avital, clifford) is the way to go. the original price on that alarm shown on the ebay ad is supposed to include install. 56 isn't bad for it. as far as the install goes, if you can find the starter, ignition, and 12 volt in the ignition harness, that's basically all you'll need. depending on the car, you may have some difficulty with the locks. it supports most types of door locks, but may require a relay for them. my 460hp came with a relay for the locks, my avital 2300 had the relay built in. also, get a cheap multimeter so you can test wires so you know you're tapping into the correct ones on the first try. and remember, the starter wire is the only one you actually cut. the rest you tap into.

Yes, definitely a refurb. You can spend a little more and get one brand new. Do a google shopping search. Python 460, avital 2100, the viper you're looking at, and Clifford all have 3 channel alarms that are nearly identical. Probably around 65 or 70 shipped for a dei 3 channel alarm.

If all you want is an alarm, they're all the same.
i got the alarm, it's a little more confusing to install then i thought. I called up a local shop and they quoted me for $130 to install it. Should i just do that or attempt to do it myself?

http://www.the12volt.com/ should have a wiring diagram for your car. see if you can figure it out from there before you take it somewhere. just don't screw it up badly because it'll probably raise that install price.
https://www.directwholesale.net/ also has some wiring diagrams and sometimes some pics to help as well.
if you do it on your own, solder. don't do it any other way. it'll be the most permanant connection.
