Radar Detectors-worth it?

ok....are radar detectors worth it? I live in a small town....

but will they detect all cops..??

just ened some general info...

im looking only to pay about 150-200 for a detector..

I have had 3 radar Detectors and got a ticket with evey one of them , No radar dect , Never had a ticket ! Dont speed = No ticket Speed + tickets

They help somtimes, but generally by the time the radar detector goes off, its too late. And you will end up getting more annoyed when it goes off everytime you pass a big store that has high tech security features that the radar detector picks up. DOn't speed

2 nights ago i was pulled over for doing 55 in a 40, SOMEHOW i was only warned by the cop to slow down, not even a written warning just verbal...

we shouldnt speed bus most of us do sometimes...i say either buy a $60 one of a $200-300 one...like a nice Escort, heard those were good

I've got an escort and have gotten 2 tickets with it. BUT, it helps when you don't have your system cranking so you can hear it and you actually turn it on helps as well.

Other than that, I am happy with mine. There is even the Phantom that says they will pay for your ticket if you get one using their radar jammer.

Yeah but the ticket is still on YOUR record and you'll pay for it next time you renew your insurance.

I've owned 5 different detectors, and while only one of them picked up automatic doors and such, NONE, I repeat, NONE of them would pick up all cops. Most cops now-a-days use lasers, which have a 3km range on them. By the time your "brand new, super advanced" detector picks up the cop, he's already got a ticket out and ready for you.

Any cops that still used radars were picked up by my detectors but not before it was too late. Many cops also use a trick now where they don't turn the laser/radar on until you ar close to them. BAM, you are caught before your detector finds him.


Basically the best defence against speeding tickets is not to speed. But if you insist on buying a detector, go for the higher priced ones as they are better units.


BTW - I do speed, not because my car can go fast, but because I like speed. Because of this I pay over $7000/year for insurance on my car. If you keep the speedo down you won't have any problems.

i think they're worthed when they're new.... but cops keep changing thier frequency...
if you're gonna spend that much, get valentine radar detector... those are the top of the line for all radar detector...

Hey guys radar detectors aren't worth it. My brother is an Oklahoma State Trooper and see not only him but many troopers around the country dont keep their radar guns on all the time. Most detectors only detect a signal if its on and if they arent using laser. All they have to do is hit a trigger and beep beep is all you hear and your nabbed. Ive been driving since I was 15 and I'm a month from being 18. My insurance is about 112 dollars every six months because of one BIG reason. I HAVE A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD. Oh and most jammers (depending on the state) are illegal and cops know your using one because if you fly by doing 100+ mph and it shows up on his screen as 65mph they are gonna figure it out. Troopers arent stupid. Just dont speed it's not worth it anyway. If you are going 80mph in a 65mph you only gain 5 minutes on a 30 minute trip. I know a guy that if he hadnt been speeding he wouldnt have gotten hit by a truck with gasoline barrels in the back that wouldnt have exploded covering his body with around 90% 3rd degree burns. It killed his wife who was in the car. She burned alive. That story is what keeps my speed down. Plus with my Toyota if I keep it under 70mph I get 38mpg.

you get 38 mpg going under 70 mph? what kind of toyota? -scott

It's a 1993 Toyota Tercel. Its only got a 1.5L 4 cylinder engine but its fuel injected so that helps too. Its really nice and the cruising range is awesome. My trunk is also big enough to fit two 12" Alpine Type R's and two amps.

Point well taken, my eyes work much better than my detector. In TX we have miles of open road, and they can't hide often.
