I have heard of tiny XP but what exactly are the upsides of it over Windows?

Yes, it would work but there might be some services missing you might want.
You could reinstall (I think) the things missing.
Make sure if you do backup your stuff so if you had to go back to your old install you could.

I think you have to burn it as a .img
Look around at http://softex.meganet.lt or http://newsgarden.net/
and find the latest Nero and download it.
Nero is all I use to burn with. Unless I'm going to copy a DVD then I use DVD FabPlatinum.
