I had one of these POS Escorts back in the day. Mine did the same thing. Something probably happened to the track it's on. Probably debris or damaged somehow? My dad disassembled the track assembly and put it back together and it worked fine after that. It was a PITA though... Another thing that worked temporarily was taking a screw driver and separating the track a bit where it's getting stuck.

Re: What's up with my automatic seatbelt?
Actually the dealer will fix it for free. A seatbelt is a safety item and is warrantied for life , I think it is from 1989 to current. I just had a repair done on a 1991 integra. and it was in fact , free. This law came into effect many years ago . as long as the car has not been involved in an accident. They will fix it and warranty the fix another 10 years . Honda does it , ford does it (ford goodwill service it is called) . nissan does it etc.. I think all car mfg's will honor it.

Any ford dealer. They will try to deny it , but let them know , you know , of the goodwill seatbelt warranty.
