Best way to remove a section of exhaust?

What is the best way to cut out a section of the exhaust without removing the entire exhaust system? I am going to cut my catalytic converter off and replace it with some regular exhaust tubing, without taking the rest of the exhaust off. I just don't know how I should cut it off.

Do you think I could use a regular welder and turn it up high and cut through it that way?

Sawzall or, if you dont want to go that route, most auto parts stores have an exhaust cutter as a loaner tool.
